Default distributo belt off?

Hey Guys,

I replaced some ignition parts and have a question about my ignition rotor. I drove my buddy's 90 C2 and his car felt real strong. I took a photo of my rotors and they are not synched. Both rotors turn with the belt. Is this wrong? Car won't start with primary coil wire off.

Rotor positions look correct. To check, just look at the caps ans you will see that the cylinder on tHe primary is the same as on the secondary. Or, rotate the engine until the #1 cylinder is TDC, the rotor will point to the notch at about the 1 O'clock position, and the secondary rotor will be at the 4:00 notch.

Regarding the "no start" on the secondary coil, switch the main coil wires on both caps and retry. If the secondary still doesn't fire, then you have either a bad coil or ignition module. Test the module by switching them to the other coil, if that one doesn't, then suspect the module, if it starts, then suspect the coil.

They line up at TDC. The plugs are getting spark. Switched wires. Both coils putting out the same amount of juice. I have replaced both coils. Since the timing is off between both rotors a little, the timing might not be just right to even run on the secondary distributor by itself.

The rotors don't set or make spark "timing".
The timing of the spark is done by the computer .
The rotor just sends the spark to the correct spark plug .
The computer tells the coil to fire off a spark , the spark goes down to the distributor , to the rotor , from the rotor to the spark plug .

It doesn't start or run on the secondary distributor by itself. Belt is not broken car runs pretty good after changing coils.

Hi

The car should run on either distributor. Something is wrong. Check the rotor carefully and the cap. Run the car in the dark and look for arcing. Make sure you do not close the garage door while the car is running.

I will try that. I checked the upper plugs which are from the secondary distributor, they looked good. The secondary is definitely getting spark to the plugs. I have some older caps in the shed I will try.

FIXED Thanks everyone!!!

I pulled off the wires from the secondary cap and found it. The Beru cap was broken where the wire contacts the cap. Some of the wires still had part of the cap on when I pulled them off. I put my old Bosch ones back on a fixed it. My car will run with the primary distributor unplugged now.

So I guess it means buy Bosch distributor cap and Beru wires.

Should not have! The problem is when the dizzy belt breaks and the secondary fires on the same cylinder each and every time.

FWIW,...I avoid Beru caps & rotors at all costs. The Bosch ones are FAR better, albeit more expensive.

You get what you pay for.

So how does it run / drive now? Just because I'm curious I think I'll check mine to make sure it will run on either distributor.

If your car feels a little flat compared to your friends I would suggest checking the WOT microswitch is being actuated. If the throttle is at max and the switch is not made the DME will not use the WOT map and performance will suffer.

Glad your car is running, on both distributors. In your picture however, it appears that the rotors are not in sync. Mine are perfectly parallel to each other, so both are firing in the same spot, at the same time.

Hi

I am not 100% on the 964's but the rotors are not parallel at any point on a 993 which looks to have the same set up. If yours are I would check to see if it runs on both distributors!
