How does one diagnose worn valve guides?

The shop that did my PPI took the valve covers off and moved the stems side to side. factory max allowed is 0.20mm. Mine had 1mm and the motor runs great and doesnt burn oil.

You mean 0.1mm? It is usually the exhaust guides that wear most, but unless the wear is excessive its not a big deal, it just means a slightly noisy valve train.

Yes, he said 1 mm movement, valve in guide with the valves in the seated position.
Apparently the stem seals are still working as it doesn't blow oil.....

That's just nonsense.

You cannot properly check a guide with the valve seated.

The tolerance is something like .015mm. e.g. valve 9mm guide bore 9.015mm per Porsche. no + - or wear spec given.

The accurate way is to use a valve guide gauge (a dial indicator with a very small bore attachment) to measure size, taper and roundness, and they are about $1800.00.

If you have .1mm movement seated they are probably worn out.
