Am I Crazy For Thinking ...
So your average turbo or supercharger kit ranges from about 2k to 5k on the very high end. So why is it that the supercharger kit for the 964 are retailing for $7,500.
(For $5,500, you can buy TWIN turbo kits WITH an intercooler)
Is it because there is only one company out there that makes a forced induction kit for the 964 and they can charge whatever they want? Or, are the kits extremely difficult to manufacture?
I hope I'm not alone here, but I feel like, if the kit was reasonably priced, the kits would fly off the shelves. I know I would buy one in a heart beat if they were, lets say, in the 4-5k range.
I'm really not trying to stir things up here, I'm just curious ...

Smaller market means lower sales volume, therefore the vendor's price has to have a larger profit margin to absorb those R&D costs and to make the product financially attractive to produce (from the seller's POV).

Fair enough ... But in a market of individuals that have proclaimed that their ownership of these particular vehicles is partially dependent on their ability to save expense by doing their own repairs and maintenance, I feel like making a particular item more fiscally reasonable would increase profits ... If tailoring to an already limited market, retailing an item at potentially extremely high margins further reduces sales volumes ...
If I'm not mistaken, a certain company has already reduced the cost of their forced induction kit considerably, which tells you that their sales volumes have be much less than desirable and are potentially hoping for an increase in sales for an item that has already gone through the expensive stage of development and testing ...

not crazy paulie. I'm with you. I'd buy one in a second if they were 4-5k. But 7500 plus any additional support/mods etc reaching 10k is a bit hard for me to justify placing funds for when I know I should be saving them for engine rebuilds/repairs.

The kit I saw wasn't for a 964, it was for a Nissan 350z. My point was simply that there is plenty of money to be made on kits that have many more parts.

Well, my last group buy was a success, but somehow I doubt TCP would sell us kits for 4-5k ... I guess I'd be on board and hopefully bmohr as well ... that's two!

That's 3! We'll have enough for a group buy before we know it without the agreement of one of the site sponsors. I'll ask, I'm just curious if we even have the interest to bother them.

Maybe it's a German car thing? The big turbo kit for my A4 is just over $6K without the intercooler. Adding a FMIC pushes the whole package to almost $7K. Mind you that is the ultimate kit that pushes stock HP from 200 to 350, quite a bit more increase then TCP SC kit gives the 3.6.
