POLL & Questionnaire

As we all know 964s are often associated with engine rebuilds. It's something that we have to take into consideration when buying a 964 - do we:

A. Buy one with a rebuilt engine.
B. Buy one without a rebuild, with a view it may happen one day.

So in an attempt to document our experiences and come to some kind of conclusion, here is a poll to answer and if you have rebuilt/ are rebuilding - post your experiences by answering the following questions:

no rebuild, but a lot of re-seal jobs done right now (without splitting the case and without changing head-gaskets. The rest of the seals is new).

Tomorrow it get´s a new clutch with lightweight flywheel and both crank-seals gets renewed. I hope it is going to be dry after that...

Nearly no oil cunsumption when driving normal. When going flat on german autobahn for hundrets of kilometers oil-consumptions goes up to a half liter/1000Km....

yes mine has had a top end according to records and I think it was at approx 85k though it needs to come apart again for a reseal @ 101K because the car has pretty much sat the last 8-9 years

Never rebuilt, goes and sounds as good as ever. As on other thread, no issues other than LOTS of leaks at 130k miles. Had the car 10 years. Currently trying to decide on basic reseal vs rebuild (bottom end? 3.8? motec? supercharger? v16 aero engine on nitrous?, etc etc..)

No rebuild here and nearly 160,000km. It'd be interesting to hear the main reason why people had their engine rebuilt - ie, was it really because the engine's internals were worn out, or was it mainly to address oil leaks.

I never got records, and purchased the car with just under 70K on it. 94K on it now, and possible rebuild because "the ceramic part of the head has disintegrated/cracked and won't dispate the heat"-- according to the shop. Jury is still out on the real course of action. So I voted no... for now

100,900 miles. Just finished! Rebuilt from connecting rods up.

Cost was $1675.00, doing everything in my garage except for the heads ($840 to check and install all valves, guides and seals)

Mine was rebuilt at around 68000 (currently 113000)

Car had a starting issue that resulted in the engine coming out for inspection

Reason was found to be failure of no 6 big end bearing (Ive got the engineers report, photos and all)

Crank and con rods were crack tested and re polished, Cylinder heads beadblasted and new exhaust valaves fitted. New rings and rebuilt and resealed

This was in 2002, bill was £3.5k, so a previous owner or so back

3. With hindsight what would you do differently: Bought one with a full rebuild by reputable indy.

Top end rebuild at JZM 105,000 miles, fairly thorough job, £3k paid by previous owner nearly ten years ago.

126,000 on it now still pretty dry and feels ok.

only at 38K miles on the odometer. Leaks at the drive shaft, steering pump shaft and cam chain covers resolved.

purchased with no rebuild - car has 95k miles on it. Leaks some oil....seems to be getting somewhat worse.....needs a litre top up if i dont drive it for a few weeks.....engine pulls strongly and recent leakdown test were excellent though....indy confirmed after driving he thinks its a good un. I am too in that dilemma - reseal or top end rebuild to sort leaks.....at the moment oil top ups do the job at a far cheaper price. In hindsight, more patience and spending maybe a tad more to get one with top end and recent clutch might have been prudent...but then i am impatient and when i say my car i was sold
