**REBUILD SURVEY** Has your car had an engine rebuild?

Not had a rebuild of my engine, as such, but sold original engine after having a 993 bottom end mated with a modded 964 top end by 9M. Engine swap was performed at 114k and was done because the original engine was not quite pulling as it had and who doesn't want a bit more go....oh and car was being used every day as daily driver and I couldn't afford to be without it whilst an engine build was to be performed.

Mine was rebuilt by Jaz in Wembley as part of my initial purchase from 911 Virgin
Reason: Three sheared head studs
Mileage: ~70k
Hindsight: pretty much a vanilla rebuild, in retrospect I'd have added a few goodies, oh well

No rebuild on mine yet. Was dry as a bone when I bought it at 97k miles, now a couple of leeks at 118k miles. The original question is interesting, but I think a more useful question would ask how many cars haven't had rebuilds yet and what are their mileages. I am there are many cars out there like mine, but all we hear about on-line is 964s 'having' to have re-builds at 100k. The web does seem to intensify negatives. Human nature?

1. Reason - It had done a lot of miles and the leaks were playing on my mind and I'm planning on keeping it.
2. Mileage - 170,000 (there is a 'top end rebuild' in the records at 125,000 miles but it turned out to be a sticking plasterjob).
3. Would would you do different - nothing. The engine is now fantastic. These cars were never meant to have more power. I don't think they need any more.
The question about buying one and having the rebuild done or buying a fully rebuilt one is interesting. I think that those of us who have the rebuild done, spend the money because we want to enjoy the cars for a good few years. Therefore, by the time we sell, the rebuild will have a number of years and miles on it. So, when we come to sell, the rebuild won't be fresh. Finding a car for sale with a fresh rebuild (less then 2 years) could be very difficult.

Mileage - 230K miles
Reason - I accidentally hooked up the alternator wiring backwards and burned the engine wire harness. The engine had a few minor oil leaks. The engine was running well otherwise.. I decided that while I had the engine out and the wire harness off, I might as well do a rebuild. I expect to finish it by the end of the year.

Mine's one of the last - a NorCal 1994 C2 manual w/ 129k, unrebuilt, that had clearly been well cared for (three owners/FSH). It's currently being hot rodded by Jeff Gamroth who has the motor out. I was delighted/thrilled/chufffed/RELIEVED to speak to Jeff last week and be told that the motor and car were in "exceptional" condition for a car of this mileage. Phew. I'm realistic to know that it will need doing at some point, though.
I monitor oil (Brad Penn 20W50) consumption, which has been difficult due to (my) low mileage and my frequent oil changes, regardless of mileage. Oil consumption best estimate is "minimal".
Had a leakdown (5-9%) & compression test upon purchase, two years and a shameful 1500 miles ago, (three) dyno run average of 277 fbhp (has "G" pipe), cat still in place.
Still on original clutch! .... well, actually, just changed to RS clutch and flywheel but not because of wear ....

Rebuilt due to snapped headstud.
Rebuild escalated from a simple top end when stripping the engine down as lots of worn parts so full rebuild. Mileage on the engine is supposed to be around the 100k mark.

No rebuild as of 94 K miles. A slightly annoying mystery oil leak will likely necessitate an engine out search for the source this winter and I will try to avoid the "while it's out" temptation for a rebuild unless its very necessary.

1. Reason for rebuild: Low Leakdown #5 & 6 - found worn #5 rod bearing
2. At what millage was the rebuild undertaken: Est 115,000
3. With hindsight what would you do differently: Looked for better engine -
This 964 engine came from a wreck with marginal history.
We are rebuilding with some mods for a race car - good case,
crank, heads, rods, cams - recondition rods, heads, cylinders, mod cams and pistons.
It appears poor maintenance, over heating or low oil level along with hard
driving may have caused these problems.
Being the owner of a 986 I agree with the comment that there are maybe
more negative comments and problems discussed than positives on these
forums. This survey should help others when looking at purchasing 964s.

Purchased the car in 1998, currently has 159,000 + miles. No rebuild to date and runs great! But, I do have a fund ready for when the time does come (whenever that may be).

Great stuff - keep em coming.
Bump.
True. Only trouble is if we do a poll for engines that haven't had rebuilds the data collected may not be valid for long as a rebuild may be on the horizon thus changing the results. Thus, even the answer here 'No still running strong!' is not a lasting answer...

A bit of a pessimistic post there Frank, you could say that about any given engine ever built.
Rebuild time for me will most likely be due to broken head stud or oil consumtion / leaks. Timing of any or all of these is unknown, especially as the cars are now of an age when they do not see a huge amount of usage.
What is the latest with regard to your engine, are you doing the rebuild or are you still at the decision stage?
