Default Power Steering Rack Rebuild

Are there any options? Why are we able to rebuild engines, transmissions, suspensions, etc but rebuilding the power steering rack isn't an option?
Mine has a very bad leak on the passenger side. I'm guessing there is a seal that is not much different than most other seals. Again I ask, Are there any options to buying a rebuilt unit for $1500.00 or so???
Thanks in advance,

Check out Vertex Auto. They had the lowest price for a rebuilt rack a few years ago when my coupe needed one. If I remember correctly, it was $500 vs $1200 from everyone else. Its been working very well since.

As for why can't we rebuild the racks ourselves? Good question.

There are earlier posts about this. I found out about this soloution some years ago.
Find your ZF dealer (they do the steering rack), give them the ZF part number on your rack and order a set of washers. It costs about 100USD. Then let a workshop re-build it for you, it will take 1-2 ours. Done!

Try this guy rtight in your backyard.

http://www.rackdoctor.net/

He did mine this winter, I was very please great service, pleasant guy and a fast turnaround time (2-3 days)

I was $299 + $18 shipping. I think a very fair price for a complete overall and cleanup.

I ordered a rebuilt unit from "Rack Doctor" this morning. I called Rich who was very helpful and was informed that he had the units in stock. Ordered today and he said I should receive the rack tomorrow. Funny that the internet told me to look in my own backyard. i will give feedback after I receive/install the unit. Thanks for everyone's help.

I hope the rack doctor works out for you. He stole 200.00 from me by selling a defective e36 rack to me and wouldn't even give me a core charge back when I returned it.

You don’t happen to have a link for the seal kit do you?

I have a spare rebuild kit if anyone is interested. I do warn you that the rebuild is not a simple DIY job and if you don't take your time you can damage the rack and render it useless.

I rebuilt my 993 rack for my 964 with the KLA Industry kit linked above. My 993 rack I purchased from Vertex leaked after a couple of years so I thought I'd do it myself. The rack was a little tight for a couple of days, but is leak free and working normally now!

BTW, there are more 993 racks so their price is lower and they are an exact match.

Maybe find a local rebuilder? I dropped mine off at JB Automotive in Santa Ana, CA and they rebuilt my rack in a couple days for around $400.
