My reason for suggesting only competent, very experienced DIY mechanics work on their 964 (or 993, 996, 997) has nothing to do with causing damage to the car as, as alexjc4 says, owner pays £s lots for their mistakes. It is to do with safety for others, 911s are supercars with >160mph top speed and very fast acceleration. A poorly maintained example may be a lethal accident waiting to happen.
Back OT, I believe Adrian's books are informative and useful despite any errors and do not regret purchasing his 964 Enthusiasts Companion.

It's an "Enthusiast's Companion", not "The Definitive Technical Encyclopedia".
In terms of being an introduction to the nuances and details of a great sports car, it certainly serves its purpose, and has a place of pride on my bookcase.
Being completely technically naive, I've still managed to use the book to guide me through a couple of minor repairs, but I've automatically checked Rennlist and other sources as well to ensure that I was proceeding correctly. Such 'due diligence' is a personal responsibility.
IIRC, Adrian's daughter passed away in the midst of him penning the book, and the book is dedicated to her. I am happy to excuse him any errors in this light, and think that he should be proud of having put together such a great guide - if I'm not mistaken, apart from the Bentley manual, no one else has taken an interest enough in the vehicle to put pen to paper.

I'm a big fan of Adrian's book. Is it perfect? Probably not. Has anyone written a better enthusiast's companion? Nope. I'd like to see the critics do something constructive instead of stand by and complain about it.
I think the 964 community is lucky to have such a book as many cars do not have a dedicated companion.

f3nr15, correct, Adrian's daughter did die while he was writing book and I was asked to consider to be a trustee of his charity. Unfortunately, I was on holiday with no email, so was not able to confirm.
Good book and well worth owning.

I feel for the guy and his family but those points are not really the issue. Nothing sucks more than finding out the hard way that a reference book is wrong. You end up always second guessing and digging deeper into other sources, all of which kind of defeat the purposely a reference book. Just my opinion.

Yes, although we try to make our manuals as accurate as possible, unfortunately we occasionally have a typo or mistake simply due to the massive amount of technical information in the books. I have both books and I enjoy Adrian's more (as previously mentioned it is more a coffee table book and an all around good read).
If you are looking for p/n's and diagrams PET is your friend. If it is procedures and how-to info you are looking for these forums and PP is the place to go. If it is specs you need the gold standard is the somewhat difficult to find and fairly expensive Porsche Technical Specifications book(let) p/n WKD 423 920. Of course superseded by Porsche factory Service Information Bulletins.

I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. In my case it is pretty much anything 964 related including a pretty comprehensive collection of original dealer posters, brochures, paint chip cards, dealer advertising kits, factory press kits etc. etc. (all for MY91)...call me OCD /shrug
