I like your new headlamps and would like to hear how you like them after a few weeks. I have a Mini with xenon headlamps that light up the night on high beam. I would love to have that on my 911's.

I know it’s long winded, but I hope I got across some of the points that make my Porsche experience so rewarding for me. I hope you can enjoy the spirit that I bring to my posts and that it lessens the cringe when you see pictures of the car.
thanks .. but there is some seriously bad news ... i sold the car a few weeks ago ... house build project is on the way. not good.

nice points .. still not quite sure about prioritizing lights over suspension, but your car is a great colour with a lot of potential to perform immensely better and look much better.

Did you read the post? Where exactly did he prioritize lights over suspension? looks to me like his buddies came up with it and wanted to test it on his car...sheesh, quit trying to get the snide remarks in.

No worries on any of this my friends, but please do read the full text...that's all we have. It's already really easy to misunderstand someone's intentions through email or posts and I don't like adding emoticons to get my point across.

sml,
Sorry to hear about the sale, I remember you were developing your car into quite a track monster...I'm sure it sold quickly. Anyway, sounds like you have your priorities right.

Let there be light: 964 HID project

I talked to my buddies and asked for more information:
- lights draw only 35 watts
- they use a 46mm bi-xenon projector
- the cutoff line when not on high beams is sharp with the proper steps in the beams.

I'll add:
- the lights start up right away. Boom, then a slight glow, then they are on.
- there is a definite cutoff line when using just the low beams. Actually I could have comfortably just used the low beams, but since only one was working I didn't want everyone playing "padiddle" as I drove by.
- I drove around fifty miles with the high beams on (through towns and rural roads) and not once did I get "flashed". I passed a sherrif just before I came back into town at the end of my drive...believe me these boys are always looking for some reason to pull you over. Not very scientific, but the experience increases my comfort level while using the lights.
- Again, not scientific but I just felt so much more relaxed knowing I could see better than with my old H5s.

Tonight might be my last night with them, other guys are hungry to test them also, so please feel free to ask more questions, it also helps me to look for things I might overlook?

I quickly layered both the high and low beam image below to give you an idea of the cutoff line. For the low beam shot, only the driver's side light is working.

Is the hi/lo action still controlled by the stock on the steering column?

Does the flash to pass feature work? Or does the HID start up time inhibit it?

Yes.

It's a really interesting project... (modern plugs direct into classic)

They use a light bucket from an older car (one of the lights I'm using is from a 912 - they are much cheaper than 911 buckets and the 912 bucket offers a few neat features that you will see down the road...).

To install the lights - take off the light ring, unscrew the lights from the metal tabs on the fender and unclip the light harness. No cutting needed. Plug-in the new harness, screw the bucket into the tabs, adjust the lights with the outside screws...you now have HIDs. That's exactly what they did to my car...

They are working on the low bean issue, but I'm afraid the might say "screw the 964" because it's a small market...and the lights already work perfectly in all the torsion bar cars (huge market). We'll see?

I might have them for a bit longer...anyone near Chapel Hill (NC) want to check them out?!

Good question. I'll test that out.
I don't think anyone around where I drive understands "flash to pass"!

I'm in Houston if you need another guinea pig . Very interested for my 964. My old 911 is a race car so won't do me any good .
