I'm trying to think of innocuous causes for the symptoms... and I just can't think of any.
Fingers crossed for you.

the smoking is the curious thing. A rod bearing failure wouldn't necessarily make it smoke.

Thanks chap..The support does actually help!

Its 11:35am and still no word....

I use Jimmy at Juniper Serra Auto in Daly City...no one more thorough and no one I'd trust more with my car. At least I'll know exactly what the problem is and she'll get the best possible care.

(still terrified of the bill I might be facing)

When a rod bearing fails it can easily score a cylinder, but worst case it will break the piston an throw oil & debris into the rest of the engine.....

Let me know if you need a new crank, rods, pistons & cylinders as I may be able to help.

Thanks Colin!

If a rebuild is necessary, what sort of ~$$ am I looking at? I've seen differing figures from $5,000-$10,000+

I know this isn't fun and I feel for you... But that is a funny statement.

Hope it's not as bad as you think.

Briefly spoke to Mechanic. Looks like I need a new engine. Getting full report in 45 minutes.

I feel sick...

Man, catastrohpic failures like this scare me. A friend, and fellow RLer (Regulatori), had an oil pump failure and had to pay a nearly 5 digit bill not long ago.

Once you get over the pain, at least you're gonna have a killer engine and hopefully plenty of worry free miles from that part of the car's mechanics.

Thanks Vandit, right now I just feel gutted!

My mech is calling me later with a full report but in the brief conversation we squeezed this afternoon, he implied the current engine is not worth rebuilding. I figure something let loose and tore it up pretty bad.

I'm so sorry to hear... can't imagine the pain. If you're going down the replacement route think about a 993 Varioram engine...

I'd love to, but I just looked at the price comparison!!!! $$$$ This couldn't have happened at a worse time!

Well, this is really bad news, sorry to hear this.

I wonder what it would take to make an engine not worth rebuilding. I redid mine after having a rod bearing disintegrate, sand in the oil tank.

But if something like a broken rod or something fractured the case, then I could see a problem.

Post pictures if you get them.

I thought the same thing, but figured that the cost of a replacement+install is probably less than that of rebuild. I think that's what he's saying maybe?

I see a rebuilt for ~$5k. Labor to drop the engine in and replace on my last clutch change (on the old C4) was ~$1k, so would $6k sound reasonable or am I dreaming?

Also, would my old damaged engine have any value to offset?

Sorry to hear this, Howard.
I surely would not be prepared for such news, it would be stunning.
Lots of knowledgeable people here, hopefully you can come up with a good plan!
