Newbies, DO A PRE PURCHASE INSPECTION B4 U BUY
#61
So you relied on the words of a mechanic who knew the car, a bunch of reciepts and your own (seemingly poor) judgement to buy a 20 year old car ? More fool you.
After your initial post I think you're misguided to expect too much in the way of sympathy on here, you failed (spectacularly) to do even the bare minimum to ensure your purchase was good (that being to have a full pre-purchase inspection carried out by an independant specialist, along with a leakdown or compression test)
As many have said on here, you Googled too little too late, now you're p*ssed at yourself for making the most basic of errors prior to purchase.
Admit the error of your ways, stop knocking a fantastically engineered product that will run for mile upon mile (if correctly maintained and used) and move on.

The problem is YOU, not Porsche. You didn't get a PPI. YOU created the mess you're in. You should be mad at yourself.
Sorry, but I have little compassion for people who create problems for themselves and then complain about the consequences of their (poor) decisions and blame others, instead of the real problem which was YOU and your lack of good sense.
The problem here is YOU. Start being accountable for your behavior instead of blaming others.
The fact that you created a fraudulent for sale ad just adds to your ineptitude. Not very "Christian" behavior.
You got exactly what you deserved. Enjoy it. You earned it.

Bummer.. At least you didn't buy a 944. Everyone knows those motors break just by looking at them
Rebuild it as a stock 3.6. If you are mad at the $$$ being spent, I can empathize.. If you don't enjoy the car, then maybe selling it would be the right move for you. Either way, you will be losing money.
I will warn you, a 996 doesn't get any better, reliability speaking.. Just search for RMS, IMS, Coolant tanks, D chunking etc etc.
If you really dig around every car/make/engine etc you will find they ALL have their warts. Stereotyping:
911 2.7 - thermal reactors, mag cases and frequent rebuild needs
911SC - Pulled head studs and CIS issues
3.2 Carrera - valve guide issues
964 - head sealing issues, venting distributors, come to mind
993 - SAI issues
996 - see above
997 - less, but some of the same 996 ailments
Oh.. and they ALL LEAK OIL.. They carry around 10-14 quarts of the stuff. Its a trademark.

You really are saying all of the wrong things. You've walked into ownership with the wrong attitude, lack of knowledge and fundamentally with the lack of the nature/ philosophy within all Porsche owners.
This is the problem. You don't buy a classic car if you can't afford it. Classic cars are expensive. You should never stretch yourself to buy in to a classic car. Even lesser so when uniformed. You should be in a strong position where by you have enough money to buy the car and more importantly to deal with any possible eventualities. Most of us here costed in the price of a full engine rebuild, we all have a piggy bank that we keep topping up for that 'rainy day'.
You aren't buying a car with a warranty.
In your now current 'famous' position here I would tread carefully and above all soak up every drop of advice any rennlister gives you. You and your car now have a reputation that would be best rectified over time: 'There's a reason we only have one mouth but two ears.'
You should sell the car, it's just not the right brand/ car / philosophy for you. It's because of people like this that the 964 gets the wrong reputation.
964s should be owned by enthusiasts.

Also remember a 964 was about $80000 new so at $20000 you can spend about $60000 to make it new again.Hope you don,t need to. I would have gotten a second opinion . If it was running condition when you drove 65 miles was it smoking like a train? Zero oil pessure?Engine knocking? If not then assorted oil leaks are no big deal. Remember how much oil you can buy for $14000 . If it truly needs a replacement engine then put in a used one (it is a used car) and sell it.

hmmmm sounds like this guy got a bad deal......I'll give you a hell of a deal so I can grab parts....hows $500.00 sound?....that would probably put you well on your way to owning your very own bmw....your dream car...just think about that...I'll suffer through with your junk porsche and it's leaky poorly engineered parts.

One question I have not seen you ask this forum is a recommendation on a trustworthy and talented shop that can properly fix your car near you.
You won't see people thrashing ferrari's, lambo's, etc at Autocross and DE events - especially 21 year olds. See 964's all the time (and even older cars than that).
Despite your bad luck...it IS a great car.
Just get it rebuilt or buy one already built and they can use yours as a new core. Chance to put a new heart in what appears to be a good chassis.

So you were financially stretched yet I see you're dying to spend more and more $$$. You have barely a hundred miles of experience and your mechanic is suggesting cams, lightweight flywheel (you admit not even knowing what it is) and even going to 3.8 liters. As many have said it will be along time before you get any return on your investments. Time to do some more research or your mechanic will retire on your folly.

My 996TT has 70K miles on it and hasnt leaked a drop in the 3 1/2 years I have owned it. My 964 with 77K miles drips a couple drops a week. Now the 964 power steering rack thats a whole different story

Try an Italian car I have owned a few, complete rubish, they do have passion, something all German cars lack, but they are rubish. They are fun to drive, but rubish.
What other car comes with factory rust?
Factory electrical gremlins?
A post with 5 million ground wires on it?
Things like diesel injection pumps on a gas motor?
presurized gas filled warm up regulator?
and random things that just fall off - BRAND NEW CARS!
Things you would never expect to fall off a brand new car... like radiator hoses and wipper arms.
