Keep the 964 cab or go to 993 or 996?

If your feeling like a change, I say its time for another toy. As much as I can like a car, theres so many toys out there to enjoy, you can always get another 964 later.... maybe one where you will like the colour, condition ect... even more than your current car. Theres lots of very nice, cared for cars out there.
I had my 993 for only 11 months before I decided to move on.
I am looking for a 996 after my 993 for a daily driver but only a 996turbo. The standard 996 engines is just a nightmare that I am not willing to gamble with.
The 996 is beautiful if you ask me, anybody who says this is ugly..... is loony.
This is a fellow rennlisters car, beautiful.

Anyone who prefers the bloated, giant winged, slatted, scooped and mass-produced 996 is probably the same bloke who wouldn't keep a beautiful 993 for even a year.
Some like Carrot Top. Some like Bill Maher.

wow... your taking 996 hating to unhealthy levels. I loved the look of the 993, another beauty for sure but for my daily driving... I needed something that worked for me a bit more. I have a few early cars and bikes to tear around in.
Carrot top is freaky!!
Another rennlisters car, this is one of my favourites.....

I'm casually shopping commuter/beater, and a $15-18K 996 is right in the wheelhouse of what I care to spend. For me, it's mostly about the interior. That's where I'll have my *** planted, right?
Maybe it's time to get my hands in an M96 engine, too. Just would hate to have an unrepairable blob that couldn't economically be brought back to life, given that a dollar spent repairing a 996 is a dollar lost.
But I can't see myself owning one as the only 911 in the fleet. If life took me to that cliff, I'd keep a beater 2.7L car going.

It's tough not to notice that no frontal photos of the 996 are shown. Yes the 996. Great body, but a face that looks like it was on fire and someone put it out with a bag a nickels.

Truly, I'm not hating at all.
Anyone can say what they want pro/con about the 996, but in the end, the 996TT above is indeed bloated, giant winged, slatted, scooped and mass-produced. Those are just facts, not a "hating" opinion.
Although it is a great value and fast as hell, I also don't think the 996TT is a very pretty car; the profile shape is disproportionate and all the scoops and slats and wings disrupt the lines and make it look too busy. I won't even comment on the headlamp treatment. Stylewise, it's not even in the same league as a 993 like the one above or a 964. Now, THAT is an opinion

Man, I am liking my 964 more and more after these posts!
As I read it, there seems to be a big line Porsche drew in the sand and then crossed when they went to the current configuration water cooled production line mass produced cars. For the most part, the newer cars do many things better but they are indeed oranges amongst air/oil cooled apples. How can anyone not love the sound of the older engines wailing in the back? What about the slight oil smell you get when you park it in the garage and close the door, even on a dry car? How about the many thumbs up you get from every day drivers? But on the other hand, the oranges have all the technical goodies of a true 21st century machine.
One question, are the Europeans buying the newer models like the old ones, shipping them overseas and reselling them for a profit? If not, that speaks volumes for the older models vs new.

Burning Brakes
Interesting topic... and a lot depends on what *you* want.
I've gone from a 911 (1977) to a 997... then got myself a nice 964 Jubilee Edition... and surprise, surprise, decided to sell the 997.
IMHO both cars will cost about the same if you're smart and know where to shop.
Take the depriciation of 996 (and even 997) into account and the 964 is the better one financially.
I prefer it because it makes you feel like a driver... a man who get's scared every now and then and then thinks... wauw: that was fun.
The 996/997 just shows you a little blinking icon and cuts some power... and you can do that all day long around a roundabout. One thing on them: the power of these later engines is phenomenal in feel. The 964 feels a little flat.
In real life I needed to work the 997 to get past a well driven 964 in spirited road driving.
Comfort: 996/997
Driving experience: 964
The 993 feels like a drivers car too... but haven't done enough miles to tell for sure.
