cylinder repair
has anyone ever used langcourt for cylinder repair ? going to send two of mine that have minor pits in them for repair and was looking for anyones experience. thanks in advance.

I thought the cylinders were coated inside and you could not redo them. Guess I heard wrong.
|
dunno...just know that i was told at the machine shop they can be done and langcourt was told what type of car and im using mahle cylinders.
|
They can be bored/honed and re-coated with nikasil, personally, I'd rather go used unless the cost was hugely different. Even then....
|
They do it on small engines all the time Re-nikasil them. A lot of motorcycles, ATVs, Snowmobiles and personal water craft use nikasil.
I just don't think it's that common to referb Porsche cylinders. |
thats right..i read it in waynes book as long as they are the mahle cylinders with nikasil coating they can be redone. the alusil ones cannot according to the book.

I use langcourt for boring and replating and have used US Chrome and Millenium in the past. The finish hone of the Langcourt is the best of the three as is the ability to keep to the tolerances. You'll want to measure the height of the cylinders when they come back to ensure that they have been machined properly. You can't do just one because they take a small amount off the top after the process is complete. With any of these processes, you'll lose the taper Mahle puts into the cylinder from the factory.

Geoffrey,
So does this mean a slight bump in compression? |
You can't do just one because they take a small amount off the top after the process is complete.
so are you saying do the opposing cylinder of the opposite when doing this ? |
All the cylinders should be the same or you will run into other problems. The height of the cylinder when installed in the case has to be the same all the way around as do the heads, or you will have problems with the cam shaft bore alignment and the sealing of the cam tower to cylinder heads. Due to the way these engines are designed it is of extreme importence that these items are in matched sets.
