hi everyone ! this is my first post and my first porsche is on her way to me.

first a little background....I was a very young kid (maybe 10 or so??) when I saw my first porsche (a 914) and from that point on I was hooked...wanted one so badly I could almost taste it...x-mas gifts consisted of anything porsche (belt buckles...posters...models...whatever I could get) years and years passed and I was unable to grab my dream. I never could seem to be able to come up with that much money at any one time. well to be honest I sort of gave up. I had recently gotten the bug to find a restorable muscle car and take my time and work on it little by little. I looked for a nice '69 camaro z-28 body. well after a severe case of sticker shock I looked elsewhere for other old muscle....same situation...disappointment...frustration....then I remembered my long ago dream and behold...actually way more affordable than a muscle car. so I pulled the trigger on a 1990 carrera 2 coupe. the body is rust free...interior needs a bit here and there nothing major......but no engine or trans.

now my question

quite a few are calling me insane. have I made a mistake or is this a viable way to procure a first porsche?

I think I can find a reasonable motor and trans and still be under what a '69 Z-28 would have cost me.

I got the complete chassis for $1200 delivery cost me another $200 but a halfway clean Z-28 shell would have cost me almost more than a complete running 964. so why are people saying I am nutz?

Yes, you are crazy, but it is probably the good kind of crazy, not the Charlie Sheen kind of crazy.

The saying is that they are all $20,000 cars by the time you are done. You just have a lot longer way to get there. You will learn a lot and when you quit having fun or you run out of money, you'll know it's time to get out.

it could be a really cool ride.. the project itself I mean. I'd love to do a full restoration; you're just a step off a restoration. Not having a numbers matching car may hurt you later on, but depending on how you customize the car it may not matter anyway.

I'd love to do an outlaw 70's 911 with a 964 powerplant! :evilgrin:

Congrats and welcome! You definitely got into the chassis at the right price point.

My first thoughts were, if you're going to do suspension work, or anything else that is easier w/out the motor in, do it now. Then start looking for a good motor and tranny setup.

You can be a bit picky since you're piecing these things together, but I would make sure that you get something either from a reputable shop or through one (have 'em do inspection etc).

I've often dreampt of getting a ripping deal on a nice chassis and then dialing up a wicked setup from someone like Jeff Gamroth (Rothsport) or another well known and regarded tuner. Depending on what you want your total investment to be - you could do the same.

hmmm...this might be pretty cool....if I understand the VIN decoder correctly I own the 964th 964 built for 1990....
