I actually started to mess with it last night. and realized the back plate was wedged in, probably the "step" you describe, so I left it alone. I spoke to Jeff yesterday. He said he would check it with a torque wrench first on the bench prior to install (should be 15 lbs), and he can do the actual install with the trans in situ. They have developed tools over time that make this possible. I know they understand what they are doing, so it's the right approach. They understand it will need to be shimmed, the preload and backlash set, ring and pinion coordinated with LSD etc., and that this is replacing a current open dif. All good. I'll hopefully have time in a couple of weeks to drive it down there and have the work done. It's not right next door, but probably worth the day of effort to get this done right.
