Default Any rennlisters with a 964 based in Sydney, Australia?

Hi All,

I am planning on heading home around July/August this year. 7 yrs in the UK is enough for me.

Just wondering what the 964 scene is like back there and the pork scene in general? Which specialists are any good and what are maintenance costs like back there?

My car is eligible for import June 26th (12mths ownership as personal car) so once its approved i will make the final decision to take it with me or not. Its only $50 for the application at the end of the day to get a yes or no answer.

One consideration is the car doesnt have air con....even as a weekend car there would be some days where it will be too hot to consider driving it. Is this an absolute deal breaker? anyone get around in a car with no aircond or a suboptimal system?

Resale isnt an issue - i understand the anti import sentiment back there. Its my P&J and i hope to keep it a long while.

Rgds,

I drove mine in honolulu and never turned on the ac .
I would open the windows and the sun roof and let the air flow ,
cause its an air cooled car .

I'd be surprised if you couldn't make a few dollars out of the deal, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't consider importing - even if it is to only resell.

My a/c is currently not working. Gets hot in summer with the leather. Fortunately I drive to work in the morning so all is ok ... it's just a hot drive home.

Big unit, was your car manufactured before January 1, 1989? I thought 964's were manufactured from 1989 and not eligible for this scheme. It's probably worth spending the $50 to find out.

If he has owned the vehicle in England for 12 months or more, the 1989 restriction doesn't apply. Re aircon - there are some days you'd really missing it. Re resale in Oz - you'll find a lot of buyer resistance for a UK import because of corrosion issues, but you can probably turn a profit over UK prices.

Rusty - not manufactured before Jan 1 1989....hence the 12mth ownership requirement (as personal use car)....which i am approaching soon. Pre 1 Jan 89 cars are different scheme and can be imported straight away.

Hi Rob - agree re: corrosion hence why the car is currently at a bodyshop getting all bodywork issues attended to and a front respray. I actually want to keep the car long term so resale is not a major factor in decision.

I dont think you'll end up buying many parts in Australia. You'll probably just buy them from type911, dcauto, autohausAZ, pelican, autoatlanta, tirerack, porscheshop, etc. So maintenance costs are comparable anywhere in the world.

Totally agree with SML, any Porsche owners in the know order all their parts from the US or UK anyway as it is up to 1/10th price (Usually) from PCA prices.
As for resale, prices for 964's in Oz are all over the place anyway. A 964 tiptronic cab can be picked up for $40k but a good manual C2 coupe with nice sensible mods can be up to $80k. There are also plenty of nice cars in the $60 range as well. That said, I've driven plenty of 964's here and the difference between the good and the bad is astonishing!
Independant service centres here will charge around $120/hr labour so that may help with runing costs. ie a minor service will be around $300 major, if you include parts for under a grand total.

And make sure you join the Porsche Club and get that bad boy out to Eastern Creek for a lap or two...
