! light comes on while braking...

Very proud of myself after completing my first rotor change, I head out to bed-in the new brake pad/rotor combo.

I follow Stop-Tech's advice and do a couple 60 to 20 decels...then 80 to 20, etc.. So slowly putting some heat into the system. Everything looks good, a couple more fast/slow repeats and now I can smell the pads. Ok, everything is fine...then big "!" lights up.

Adrenaline starts rushing through my body. "are the brakes still working?"...oh ****, everything feels ok...then I laugh, I'm low on gas...gas tank waring light.

Random story I know, but good example of how sometimes you worry the sky is falling with these cars if something little happens. Got to relax my guard.

Happened to me more times than I care to admit.

Seems the 'achtung!' light should have a sidebar "degree of importance" co-signal...
  1. "eh"-level (e.g., low on gas)
  2. "duh"-level (e.g., the hand brake's on, idiot)
  3. "crap"-level (e.g., low brake fluid)
  4. "OhCRAP!"-level (e.g., zero oil pressure w/ running motor)

Heh, forgot one:
0. "gremlin"-level (i.e., Nothing's wrong... just seeing if you're awake, mate - and, oh yeah, you've got an electrical problem to track down.)

Good story, Jetta! I feel your paranoia!
What rotors did you use? The PPI said the rears are close to needing attention, so I will need to do something soon.

My first thought is that your brake fluid level is low. But Lonnie already covered that.
