Default Whale Tail- and Price and Mile question

I am looking at a 964- the biggest issue?

It has the Whale Tail and I really prefer the cleaner look. Is is easy to remove this or would I have to live with it?

Comments welcome as well- totally stock 1992 C2 with 41K miles.

You could remove it, people do it all the time. I'd even be interested in buying it from you if the price is right.

Is the red porsche a Turbo-look edition?

No, but the original purchaser spent 10,000 updating it to look like one (at time of purchase, receipts are with the car from the original dealership)

Owner wants 24K- probably a bit high.

I'm of the opinion that the Turbo look car will look very out of place and strange without the tail.

But if that's your preference, then you will probably be able to swap with another rennlister.

You are right, I didn't figure out the turbo look until later- it would look odd.

What do you guys think about the price?

The 1994 Carrera 4 came as a wide body (turbo look) without the whale tail. It looks fine to me.

It is really a lovely car, and knowing all of the work that went into making it a turbo look- I can live with the spoiler I think.

Next question- I am looking at an 18 year car with only 41K miles on it, only a couple of thousand miles per year. I know that this can cause problems with P cars (or any car really), so I am looking to have a thorough PPI completed, but should I be scared?

I know the car had the clutch and flywheel replaced recently (it had the bad dual mass one), and he says it does not leak, but thoughts?

And what do you think a car like this is worth?

Thanks again!

The C2 Turbo is one of my all time favorite 911's and this car looks great. Personally I like the Turbo's much better with the tail on.

Low mileage is good. But the premium price seems out of line. It is a one of a kind, i.e. non-factory car. I'd offer him 20 and go from there.

Make sure that the PPI is sound. A 20K car can easily turn into a 35K car depending on the engine.

Thanks for the advice!

I was thinking 20k was the right offer as well- assuming a solid PPI.

The service history seems sound, however it is uncertain if the dual ignition system has been properly serviced- so that is a concern.

Flywheel has been addressed and I think the leaky heads had been addresed in 1992.

There are a couple of well respected shops in the area for a PPI, so that is good

Do potential buyers typically hang around for the PPI? Wondering if I should try to come to a price agreement and then fly up and escort the car to the inspection?

The wide body look is what some of us here would like to have. The cost to replace the fenders, skirting, bumpers, tail, and paint for me is cost prohibited.

The only item I added are the speedline wheel look alikes which came on the 1994 964 Turbo (aka 965 Turbo).

Check out the 964 Turbo thread for some photos. If it was me, don't change the look and add the speedline wheels...

Slippery Slope... Have Fun!!!

I wrote up a contract with my P.O. an gave him a $500 deposit and drove it to the mechanic myself for the PPI. The contract stated I would pay x$ and accept up to $500 in needed work as a result of the PPI. When the car needed a little more, he wanted his price, so he took care of the little issues that added up to another $500 over and above my 'deductible' . It was nice to have it all in writing to prevent wiggling and excuses. Since it needed more than $500, and I had it writing along with the PPI report, there was no way he could keep my deposit if I decided to walk-away.
Kind of like buying a house. You walk around the house with the inspector so you can see and understand all the issues uncovered. Also keep in mind that low mileage C2s coupes are getting harder and harder to find.

Looks like all factory parts as far as front and rear covers.. I think if you could pick that car up for twenty that would be a great buy!! Car looks very clean, tan insides are hard to keep clean.. It will be always worth more in the long run with a turbo body.. On the tail is it a c2 turbo??? If it is its worth big bucks if you sell.. You can tell by the deck lid and the rubber.. If it is a little thinner on the rubber lip. its 965.. Older ones or aftermarket are fatter.. What about suspesion?? c2 turbo or spacers. .. Any way it is a very nice car.. Im for it good luck GREAT MILES I agree with Laker real hard to find.
