On a conventional equal length header system, 90% of the performance gains to be had will come from the design of the collector. Burns Stainless make very nice and affordable 3-into-1 merge collectors (which is why S-Car-Go use them) - a merge collector is one that has a narrow neck at the joint to accelerate the gas over a wide rpm range.
Thus if you want a "less expensive" system that actually works, simply buy a pair of Burns collectors and have someone fabricate the headers pipes to approximately equal lengths. If you're clever about it you can also fabricate the header pipes long with the entry into the collector straight, thus if you want to play with the power band you can shorten the pipes to suit (I would always start with a long header in any case to increase low end torque).
Don't be tempted to use large secondary pipes after the collectors as this will slow down the flow, and finally if you are feeling adventurous, think about adding a third 2-into-1 merge collector onto the two secondary pipes & run a single silencer.....
