Doug's Fix #36 - Broken Rear View Mirror
The idiots who replaced my windshield broke the tab on my rear view mirror. So now the car has the collar attached to the glass but not the mirror. Can this be fixed? ..or do I just have to buy a new mirror?

Thanks. Talked to one of the guys in our shop (a welder) and he concurs. He says it's a cast piece and the weld would be too difficult. He also doesn't feel a glued bond would last.
Oh well, what's another $85 when you're spending thousands, right?

I replaced the mirror with an auto dimming one which came with a new mount that i glued on the windshield. Ran the wires inside the rubber trim down into the passenger footwell for power.
And it was actually cheaper than buying a new mirror from the dealer, plus about an inch wider (fit perfect between the visors).
Auto dimming was nice (it was on my gone but not forgotten silver C4) as we have alot of BIG pickup trucks here in Alberta whose headlights tend to shine down into the car - even their daytime running lights are bright and annoying.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. Sounds like rather than repair, you went another route.
I couldn't tell from the photo exactly where yours broke, but FWIW for anyone else experiencing this problem:
When I broke mine in the middle of the round "rod" portion of the bracket, I drilled a small hole lengthwise down through it, applied some epoxy to the break and inserted a screw to pull the two pieces together. It's held for a couple of years, but I don't have anyone else driving the car who would cause a lot of moving of the mirror for adjustment.
Saw one a while back on eBay that went for $80 I I R C.

I feared any bonding wouldn't last. I just bought a new mirror. Arrived today. They're a little stiff to put in, but with a small hammer and a towel to protect the new mirror and the new glass, one can gently tap it into place.
