Update on amount of Tiptronic fluid ??

Hello all,

While reading the book Technical Data Without Guesswork from Bentley Publishers I read that there was an update in 1994 in the amount of transmission fluid of the 964 Tiptronic with an increase of 0.5 litre. (page 205, section 37-3 in recent version...).

There is even a picture of a DIY modification of the Max - Min marks on the outside checking gauge (Max. and Min. marks raises 15 mm...)

It is not clear for me if this update only concerns the last produced 964's in 1994 or that this update/modification is also valid for the older/earlier produced 964...

Someone around who can clear this mystery ?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Dick964

According to the TSB (39402 dtd 07/28/1994), this was implemented to correct ATF flow noises on Tiptronics in a cold condition, or when driving 'a scraping noise is heard'.

It applied to model year 1995 cars (the new 993), however the TSB notes "The same procedure should be applied in compliant cases on the 911 Carrera 2 model year 1990 to 1994 with Tiptronic Transmission'.

It also notes "In addition, the ATF lines near the transmission must have a minimum clearance of 20 mm to the body. If not, the lines should be slightly bent outward."

Hello Ken,

Many thanks for the information. I will look up this TSB.

Noises ? Scraping sound ? Something I have to worry about if I do not raise the oillevel in the Tip ?

Dick, the change was implemented to address an issue in Tips appearing in the then-new 993; these were new transmissions. Given your Tip tranny is now 20+ years old with tens of thousands of miles on it, I would say that if it is quiet and shifts properly then you don't need to change anything.

And if that isn't the case, then IMO given the mileage and age I doubt adding an additional ~15mm of fluid will help much, because it's probably time for a rebuild.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your reply.

No, my Tip is fine and in a good shape. But to keep it that way I was wondering if the raise of oillevel would be crucial to keep the Tip in good shape.

Last thing that came up to me that maybe more oil will keep the Tip much cooler...

Kind regards,
