Default Engine Success

Today the latest two valve, air cooled engine went on the dyno. With moderate cams, idle necessary for the Tiptronic and the A/C compressor, in excess of 440 HP. With a few modfications, 445 HP. Before anyone asks, no parts supplied by anyone posting on these boards.

Congratulations Robert.

I have been waiting for your final HP numbers with great interest. I only wish I would have the time and resources to mirror a fraction of your collective accomplishment.

Perhaps this brings the America GS project one step closer to closure. BTW, was PMS able to sort out the computer mapping with the tiptronic or did you have to resort to complete reverse engineering?

Great numbers Robert. How was the torque figure to go with that?

An engine dyno. To be precise, a Porsche engine dyno.

Good to hear Rob, at least one person in this insane world is doing this properly.

It always has irked me that dyno testing gets done with an engine in the car......not sure why, but I just like an engine on a dyno in a test cell.

The answer is money. A proper engine dyno is very expensive and requires an isolated and vented environment. Further, putting an engine on a proper engine dyno and running it takes time and expertise, all of which would cost a shop, tuner, etc., and the client, money. As such, most shops, tuners, etc. do not have one. And there are even those who suspect that, in some instances, the lack of an engine dyno gives more leeway to "interpret" results to the benefit of the shop, tuner, etc.

Great figure Robert !

When i had a tour around the Ruf factory i was impressed to see a proper engine dyno room & control booth. I commented that it must take serious time to setup. The Ruf guy laughed and said "but its the only way you can get a correct reading!"

When I hear people infer that the way Porsche did things is the best and it can't be bettered...I think about Robert's project. Of course it's a different price point, etc., but it's nice to see examples of perfection in this day and age. Plus we get to see PERFECTION applied to our old cars!

Thank you. Let me note, however, that much of what has been done would not have been possible without the cooperation of a rather large group of people at Porsche AG including, of course, Porsche Motorsport in Germany and in America.

Thought you might like to see a screen shot of the crankshaft that will be in the final build.

Mr. Linton,

will we have a chance to see some pics, drawings or info about components of your engine?
440 HP sound fantastic...
