91 targa, 77k, $13.5
I went and test drove a 91 targa, 77k miles, asking 15K. Car was in pretty good shape. Only problems I noticed right off the bat was driver's seat worn, saw a couple drips of oil on the ground under the engine, and speed odometer only goes to 40 mph. Owned for seven years by lady, who by the way didn't keep any records. I told her I'd get back to her. No more than 30 minutes after I left, she call and lowered the price to 13.5. I'm thinking about doing a PPI and leakdown and compression to see the condition of the engine. She has another car she drives and this one just sits. I'm thinking with no records am I asking for trouble even if the PPI comes back pretty good? What do you think?

Well, its going to cost you $20k - $13k plus a $5k rebuild, clutch, tires, etc... or $20k for a cherry...
Does it have 77k miles at 40mph? Or 140k at 80mph but the speedo is slow? Are the foot pedals worn heavily? Whats the carfax/autochecky say?
Or... $13k and its a cherry already and you have, in fact, found a diamond in the rough.
Regards,
Mike

I know, so many ways this thing could play out. I think I'm going back and take a closer look at it tomorrow. She came along on the test drive and it was like driving Miss Daisy; slow down around the curbs, watch the bumps, watch your speed, etc. I really couldn't get a good feel for the car because she was there. Tomorrow I'm going back and redline it a few times and just see how it plays out. But, I would rather pay 20K up front than to be nickel and dime to death. I don't understand that spedo. Why just 40mph, why not 85, or 25.

I'd say as long as you've planned for some repairs, you've got a steal. I paid $7000 for mine, found in an abandoned cotton mill with 120k on the clock. One owner car, bought new in cash with receipts since new until about 117k miles. It needed an oil change, valve adjustment, new oil level sending unit, and it runs great! I still need to sort out the A/C (or lack thereof), but otherwise a find... BTW, it was blowing white smoke when I got it, but this being my 4th Porsche, didn't let that scare me off.

I'd guess that between the PPI (there will be something to leverage), lack of records and willingness to drop the price 1.5K without asking that she might take 12K cash. At that price I don't think you can go wrong. I'm assuming it's not a tip...those aren't holding their value as well.

It's a manual. Color is I'm gonna call it dark cherry or something with tan or beige interior. It started right up, one puff of smoke, idled steady. One question, can you buy new leather covers for the seats, and if so, where and how much. Sounds like I'm going to take a chance.

Just my 2 cents, get the inspection done, these cars cost a lot to repair and it would be nice to know what your in for before you purchase.... A little extra time & money spent now can say you $$$$. Good luck and let us know how you go!

Thanks for the replys. I've decided to pass. I'm in no mood for fixing a lot of things right out of the gate. Anyway, she said that a person from Texas is interested and suppose to do a PPI today. She hasn't call me back so I suppose someone got a pretty good deal.
