From the link of mojorizing, 1st picture, one sees that if there is a leak between the counter-pressure-dumpvalves 11 (Ruckstauventile) and the mixing chamber 20, these valves will not 'dump' the hot air in the wheelwell but let it pass towards the mixing chambers, decreasing the efficiency of the cooling.
I think it's explained in Adrian's book.
