964 is working again - except.....

I got the 964 back a couple of days ago, this time with the new alternator I'd wanted fitted the first time I took it to the mechanic. It's very clear the problem I had is now solved - starter spins over properly, I can now see where I'm going in the dark - and something I can't explain - the fact that my stereo has only been giving sound out of the rear speakers for a couple of months has completely disappeared since the alternator was fitted. Very odd.

Anyway - I (apparently) have one remaining problem. My recent girlfriend commented last night that the car smelled of fuel. I've never noticed - and couldn't tell last night either, but my sense of smell is not the best. I'm aware of the filler neck issue, and if I'm so inclined might give it a go at some point (although I might wait until I notice it myself). However - I was just reading the thread about that procedure, and the pictures reminded me of something else.

What is the circled part in the attached picture? Is it the carbon cannister thing? Mine has always been loose - ever since I had the car. Could that be something to do with the fuel smell? And how do I stop it being loose!

Oh...so that's the fuel smell. I guess I better check this out too...

Recently acquired! ;)

One good thing about her (although not the only thing I hasten to add, just in case she reads this) - is that my favourite local road is directly between us. Which I got to blast down last night in the 964. :)

dump her and get one that cant smell. A proper 964 is suppose to smell like oil and gas

I confess, I did use the "all 964s smell like this" line........ It's only on here I questioned whether I might need to fix something!

I inspected mine a week ago and it was cracked on top where the hose connects to it. Does anybody have a part number? I need to buy a new one. Also, what is it?

you talking about your girlfriend, or the part on the gas tank??:jumper::jumper:

Geez. Now there's going to be a run on those parts too, and the last guy to buy will pay an arm and a leg more than everyone else. :banghead::rolleyes:

We're still waiting for somebody to tell us what it is! ;)

That is a vent valve...

If your car is experiencing fuel odor in the trunk or outside there are a few things to check I will start with the least expensive ones (be sure to take out the front trunk carpet and clean it well. This will remove any old fuel smell once you have done any or all of the fixes listed here:

1. Check all hose clamps are secured. This also includes the tube going to the carbon canister.
2. Fuel cap seal. This seal can be purchase separately for around US$3-4.00 or you can just buy a new fuel cap.
3. Vent valve at the top of the small fuel tank on the drivers side could be craked. Part No. 964 201 175 01

I just glued mine for now...

LOL@ thread! :D

My C4 smelled of fuel and was easily fixed by a new gas cap (sometimes it really can be that simple...even with a 964!)

Wachuko 05-21-2010 01:24 PM

Gas tank check valve in case it ever goes bad... since Porsche has a tendency to raise prices, better get that now before it continues to go up... wish I had done the same with the A/C front blowers :grr:

How does it secure? Mine doesn't sit flush with the top of the tank it's just "loose" in the hole where it sits. Is this normal?
I will order a new tank cap. Since I can't detect the fuel smell anyway, let's hope it arrives before the girlfriend gets bored of me!

kdfwagen 05-21-2010 03:05 PM

it just sorta sits in there like a cup in a cup holder. Mine is loose as well, doesn't matter. However, mine is cracked..
