Worst Luck Ever
I was looking under the dash this morning trying to conceal some wires (mainly speaker wires that sometimes fall down). I noticed the a large set of wires on the passenger side going into through a gromet into the front trunk. The gromet had popped out and I went to try to push it back in place. All of a sudden I hear some crackling and sizzling. I run around to disconnect the battery, however before I can smoke starts pouring out from behind below the right blower and then a small fire starts.
I get the battery disconnected, but the damage is done. I am not sure if I even have the desire to pull everything out and see the damage that has been done (let alone which electronics are now fried.)
Not a very good way to start my morning.

The wires were already chaffed because of the loose grommet. You may have saved yourself from a fire while underway, and that could have been far worse.
Chances are only one or two circuits are affected. Pull the bundle apart and find the shorted wires. Shunt around the damaged ones, and you should be good. Did any fuses blow?

"UPDATE. I would have never even considered this but as I was telling the story to a non-Porsche friend (I mean seriously how often does a car catch on fire driving into a mechanic?!) someone with us had an idea that I didn't even consider. Because it was an electrical fire it is covered under comprehensive insurance at some companies, and after a few calls mine is one of them. Moreover since its a claim not based on poor driving it also doesn't effect my rate."

The first picture shows the wiring harness and grommet that I was trying to re-seat.
The second is blury, but under the blower was were the small fire was.
Unfortunately the only way I can see to get to the damaged area is to pull out the hvac system which also I think means pulling the gas tank.
I am not sure I am up for that. I just may use AAA to have it towed and let an Indy shop work on it.
And this after I sheared off a rear lower shock bolt a couple months back.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, but I agree that it's better to happen in your garage rather than on the road. Hope your insurance company will cover it. Wishing you better luck...

I did install A/A on my car, so I had to remove gas tank and HVAC system on trank. To tell you the truth, it was a nice adventure and your car deserves it.
Go on and enjoy the repair: no one will do it with more care as you would...

Hi Darryl,
I hope that I can back on the road soon. Suspension and new wheels are such an improvement over those boat anchor wheels that it came with.
Hope everything is going well in Jacksonville. Let me know if you get down to Wilmington.
Hi MA70080,
I have decided to at least start the attempt to do the repair myself. If I get in way over my head, I will get the car towed to the mechanic. I am hopeful that when I get the fire wall out, I will be able to see how much damage there is. I will post pictures as soon as I get in there.
Thanks
