964 self-inflicted wound?
#17
Yesterday (Sunday) I had about 2 hrs to devote to the P-Car. I found that the top plug wire on cylinder #3 wasn't fully seated (and it was plug wire 10 of 12 that I checked). I'll know for sure once I get everything back together (probably Tues evening) but I think I've solved my prob.

This past Friday I finally had time to put back together everything I had to take off to check the spark plug leads. Having properly seated the top plug wire on cylinder 3 and having replaced the defective distributor cap, the car runs great! Thanks for all your help.

Dirty gas filter restricting fuel to the engine? Dirty idle solenoid? Bad head temp sensor?
If the car starts and won't idle, it may be a fuel problem instead of an electrical problem. After it starts, can you run it for several minutes until it begins to warm up to see if it's the head temp sensor?
I have been through the full gambit with a similar problem to what you describe. Fixing a leaking intake system and cleaning a dirty idle solenoid got it running great for a few weaks, then a hard cold start similar to your description. Car runs better than ever after it's warmed up a couple of minutes. I'm installing a new head temp sensor this morning and I'm pretty confident I'll be all set again.

DUH!
Didn't read through to the last post. I was wrong, obviously.
Isn't it an incredible feeling when the car runs great after you've found and fixed a problem! Enjoy.

My guess is you got down to the point were you have condensation residue in your tank and are sucking a water and fuel mix into the system -
Go back and disconnect the fuel line and bleed the fuel into a clear glass jar so you can see what you are pumping out - If there is water in the fuel you will see it right off it will go to the bottom of the jar - also look at the color and content of the fuel -
It really sounds like you a water and fuel mix getting to the injectors.
