Automobile Mag Top Ten 911's of all time
#4
If I read it correctly, this is the top 10 list from Automobile.com:
10. 2010 Turbo
9. 2004 GT2
8. 1998 Turbo S
7. 1995 Carrera RS 3.8
6. 1992 Turbo S
5. 1989 Speedster
4. 1987 Clubsport
3. 1981 SC Targa
2: 1978 Turbo 3.3
1. 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7
IMHO the 964 is underrated and will be later appreciated.

+1.
They're the perfect mix of old and new to me...the 993 is a bit flashy for my tastes (though I could get over this for the right TT ), yet of the 3.2 and SC's I've driven, they all seem OLD after getting back in my 964. My 964 never feels old to me, yet it doesn't feel new....WEIRD, but I like it.

No love for the early cars............
And what's "all that" about an '81 Targa? Something those had versus a '78, '79, '80, '82, or '83????
Funniest thing is that none of these, in their as-delivered form, compare to how pretty much all of ours turn out in tweaked form. In other words, go drive a stock '73RS on XWX's or CN36's and report back how wonderful it is.

Anyway, if you're just looking at all of the cars through a prism of cars today, how could you not think everything new/recent isn't "the best"? If you do rate them against their then-new competition, a 2.2S was a damn nice car if you cared to understand how to drive it. (2.4S had the compression drop which really took away from the experience; the longer stroke doesn't make up for it.)

Hard to imagine not commending airbox pop-off valves and "3.2" chain tensioners to any newby SC owner.
(Regardless it being one of the prized '81 Targas, or not.)
Agree with the past judgments being most only comparable to past standards.
