Default Where are the VIN tags located?

I am going to look at a car or two, and want to know where the VIN tags are located on the various panels.

Thanks!

How about on the fenders? Hood? Etc.

I want to be able to tell if the car has seen paint / replacement panels.

look for the option sticker under the hood. If the hood is replaced the sticker most likely will be gone.

That sentence should be added to everybody's PPI list...

The VIN is stamped in the front trunk on a tab under/slightly in front of the fuel tank.

The VIN stickers won't tell you that given that there are only two of them. Hoods can be repainted with the sticker intact, or stickers can be glued on to new hoods. If you really want to know, why not just take a paint gauge:

It's also on an aluminum plate fixed on the left side of the trunk as you look in from the front. You need to pull the trunk carpet to see it (see below). On the opposite of the trunk there will be a sticker with the paint code and description.

example VIN stickers and hood option sticker. There is also a metal tab on the driver side A pillar that has the VIN stamped that can be seen through the windshield (picture from inside the car as the reflection made a photo difficult from outside).
Sadly though, i don't have an aluminium VIN plate. Weight savings I guess

Interesting issue. My US-America Roadster is also missing this aluminum plate, that Steve`s UK-car has. All other stickers etc. are correctly in place at my 964.

All my former German 911 had this plate. Could it be, that US-964 are not equipped with this plate?

Could be.
On mine the two rivets are there for the plate, but there isn't a gap between them and the body, or a "shadow" in the paint, so it doesn't appear that the plate was ever fitted.
Maybe the plate is a UK or Euro thing?
Also, my brake fluid reservoir is on the other side of the trunk, and didn't come with the "factory vise grips" on the line either

Loving that last comment

This thread has thrown up some interesting differences. Mine doesn't have the sticker on the A pillar.

When in need of knowledge of something I usually break out Adrian's book and low and behold he says that rest of the world VINs are on the plate in the front trunk (as in my pic above) while USA VINs are on the A pillar that can be viewed through the windshield. And all 964s regardless of country they were destined for have the VIN stamped on the plate below the gas tank.

Nice to see another burgundy interior
