Did our stereos suck when they were new?
I was driving today listening to my stock system when it occurred to me that the stereo is really crappy for a nice car. I wonder is that the way it sounded in 1992 or are the speakers just tired?

I don't know how they sounded new, but 18 years later the stock speakers are definitely overdue for replacement. I know when I pulled mine out they were DONE. I fitted some nice Infinity co-axials - didn't feel like screwing with separate tweeters, plus I have RS door panels - and they sound great.

I remember an article that said something like "after 69k Porsche still charge for the CD player and the sound quality is a completely mismatch with the car". Then they sugar coated it with the engine sound is the best quality, yada, yada... So I guess yes, they sucked from day 1.

Sound systems have come along way in 18 years. I would imagine that a cheap system would sound a whole lot better than the original Blaupunkt in our cars. I still have the original system fitted, although i never tire of that air cooled burble

We don't need not freaking stereos... volume control for the music is the gas pedal...
Seriously, if you are still using the original speakers, pretty sure those are toast by now.

if you install a decent amp (in my case alpine pdx4x100) and new head unit with i-pod or mp-3 dock then:
-1)sound will be about 1000x better
-2)instead of having to carry around a bunch of cd's you can load all your music on i-pod or a USB chip (8GB i pod holds about 2500 songs)
we have an old i-pod and it holds about 800 songs
intalled new speakers (bostons/alpines -stocks sizes, but key to any audio system is the amp and porsche stock amp sucks....YES I TOO LOVE SOUND OF EXHAUST BUT FOR ROAD TRIPS OR LONG DRIVES NOTHING BETTER THAN THE STONES WAILING ON A GOOD AUDIO SYSTEM

2 - must agree - CD's aren't convenient but sound better. Far better than a millions of mp3's.
Old amplifiers often sound also much better than modern supermarket products. But you may have your own opinion.

I have not figured it out. The car came with all of the bells and whistles, amp, crossovers, and component speakers. It should have sounded good.
In my recollection though to the other 1980/90’s cars I have owned, the pcar is the worst sound system.
Mine has a crummy aftermarket head unit though, which could be part of the problem. Good thing the car does everything else so well.

I replaced my speakers with Polk audio two way speakers OEM size no modifications to install.
The stock Blaupunkt paper one way speakers are very cheap. Porsche probably spent $.50 per speaker. And the tweeters and passive cross overs are nothing to be to proud of in the "Hi Fi" package.
The 993 had a Nokia designed Hi Fi that was an option. This was Porsches first attempt to try to get decent sound in the 911. Far over priced IMHO.
Bose got the contract in the water cooled cars and even that is over rated IMHO. But better than the stock option for sure.
I just use my stereo to listen to NPR on the way to work now and then when in traffic.
