Tiptronic to manual?
hi all
has anyone done a conversion from a tip to a manual or does anyone know if its possible and what is involved? cheers |
I do not know much about the 964 conversion, but in the Mercedes world, engine mounts and every bushing is different between the manual and automatic-transmission cars. Engine mount and bushing compliance are tuned to minimize NVH, and you risk having a buzz box if they are not the correct parts.
There are also differences in the engine controls. The interior pieces are non-trivial to change over as well. If the 964 is engineered anything like a Mercedes, it will be a real bear to make the change properly. |
Oh no you don't! Get back out there and sort out our 'limp' mode problem. :roflmao:
On a more serious note though, the swap over sounds quite involved (there are a few accounts on here and Pelican) and secondhand gearboxes are quite rare and expensive. Most people will suggest selling the whole car and buying a manual model as the most economically viable route. Rich |
Read the latest Excellence (or was it last month), where the writer went through this exact transformation. He found it easier than expected. Then again, everyone told him it was next to impossible.

Hello Karlos & RonCT
I'm also interested in this subject. Altough I can't buy this magazine here locally. Do you guys or anyone here on the forum have got a copy or a scanned version on this subject If anyone here can help me you can sent it at: turbo.bart@hotmail.com Thanks already |
Can't scan and post, that's illegal. And Pete Stout is a great guy and a member here at RennList. Doing so would also violate the terms of use of this forum. Here's the section from the rules post:
Copyright Materials: You may not post any copyrighted material that you do not have rights to. Please link to external articles rather than post them in the forums. Posting or soliciting copyrighted material (Carfax reports for example) is prohibited. The article may be available online at the Excellence site. Anyone in the world can order a back issue, find out how at their website. |
I also read the article, it goes against the common advice of selling the tip and buying a manual. I applaud the guy that did the conversion, his dedication paid off.
Here's parts list off Excellence's web site: http://www.excellence-mag.com/pnl.html |
Can you verify the tip to manual article is in the dec issue. iam going to order a issue myself. thanks

For those of your familiar w/ the cars, article, and/or process, would the conversion parts included in this listing work on a 964, or just a 993?
