to widebody or not...

For the look, sure. But until you get into some activity involving timing, is it worth it?
To the point of fiberglass being robust enough for the street, I did 911 #1 (the '68) in 1981 with absolute crap Mitcom and AIR products. Plus, I was a teenager doing my first bodywork of any kind. The widebody/IROC body I ended up with stood up to 7 years of street and pretty heavy track duty without ever needing to be repainted (except for the nose). No fender liners, nothing. All I kept from the original body was the basic shell, the rear quarters and the doors.

You can convert a 964 to a 993 RSR (extra-wide body) using Getty Design fiberglass bits. It allows much bigger wheels/tires (I run 11" and 13" slicks f/r).
It's great for a track car. I would not use fiberglass panels on a street car as they are too fragile - you can not lean on them with impunity and they get damaged from stones (paint stars). Also, it greatly increases the aerodynamic profile and drag is increased. Make sure you need wheels that wide before you sacrifice that much on the straights.

good think about the narrow front and relatively narrow rear (even though they are 2 inch flares) is you don't get much aero drag on this configuration. You can really see the advantage when you go up against wide body cars like F40, 50 or CGT...around 120 the narrow body car just pulls away.

Here's my conversion -
I love it, and it gets tons of complements!

I got them from Better Bodies. No affiliation, but they're great to deal with. I buy my aluminum pedals from them, too. Be careful when you search, though - search on 'betterbodies porsche'. If you leave off 'porsche', you'll be directed to all kinds of crazy links.

Here are a couple of pics of before, and just before the conversion:
-------
I was quoted about $17k for the repairs, to get the car back to stock, per typical shop rates and quality of the work. I decided to spend the same $17k, but go with a cheaper job from a bodyshop that I trusted (I got way more than I paid for), and I spent the difference on upgrades like the widebody kit, steering wheel, wide wheels and tires, etc. That was about 6-7 years ago. I didn't file a claim on it...
After a few years, some of the cheapness of the job started to show through. Luckily , I bumped some old lady in her Camry who wasn't as aggressive as me entering the highway. It was very minor, but we ran it through insurance, so I took my money, plus a bit more and did a full respray. Once again, not a 1st class job (I paid about $5k total), but I should be good for another few years.
This time, I added the H4 headlight upgrade, which made a big difference.
I added the fixed spoiler when the mechanical one broke. Rather than get it repaired, I upgraded!
