Default Engine Tray Value

I know, I know - you're thinking OMG! the 964 newb wants to discuss engine trays! You can relax. I went through that drill when I owned a 993 C4S and have made up my mind about them (I prefer to have them on). One of my mechanics has one and I'm wondering what would be a fair price to pay him for it.

Thanks,
JohnA

There is one on Ebay for $200.00 which is way too high. Perhaps one of the Rennlister's who dislike them so much, will make you a good deal?

My 964 was "trayless" when I bought it and I believe that someone on here sold me one for $175.00 plus shipping. That was 4-5 years ago.

Regards,

Ken

Anyone in Seattle have one for sale? My car gets nervous in turn 1 at SIR and I'd like to try it with the tray in place to see if it makes any difference. That's a 125+ mph bend with a surface change.

Your 964 would probably handle better as it would be lighter since your wallet would weigh less......

I don't blame you for wanting it- if my car were missing it I'd try to get one too. I like everything factory correct.

OK, OK, you guys have goaded me into commenting about engine trays....

There are at least three reasons why my decision is to install one:

(1) One of my mechanics, an American who is fluent in German, was trained at the Porsche factory. He's a MacGyver kind of guy and he knows "everything" about Porsches - truth be told I think he knows more than 99% of all of us who post to forums. Anyway, he is a pretty impassive guy but he gets animated when this topic comes up. He is convinced that: (a) Porsche usually knows what they are doing and (b) you get *more* effective cooling with the tray installed due to the design of the engine bay. His credentials and knowledge are pretty persuasive for me. But I am an empiricist and if there have been operating temperature tests run with and without the tray under the same conditions that prove it runs cooler without the tray then I will believe it.

(2) Believe it or not, I do get my cars above 150 miles per hour from time to time (don't ask). And it is true without doubt (many tests have been run) that the car is more slippery and more solid with the tray installed.

(3) I like originality.

I know that this topic for some reason is religion - kind of like Macs vs. PC's and Budweiser vs. Deschutes Brewery. If there are tests out there regarding operating temperatures I would love to see them.

Cheers,
JohnA

P.S. Oh, on another religious topic... I installed a SW chip today and OMG! I haven't run a dyno test but the butt test is pretty convincing that there are significant performance gains, including quicker throttle response and better acceleration. (Is Loren still on the board?)

I just sold mine, and I know the conversation has gone past this, but I found some on www.DCauto.com for $300, but you can make offers on them so you could probably get one for much less. (no affiliation, just poking around)
