Default Yet Another Fuel Gauge Issue Problem

I have a 964 Cup -same gas tank, sender, and fuel gauge as 964 - so nothing different there.

At the end of a race, the gauge registers about 1 mm above the empty slash. If I let the car sit for a day or so and then start it, the gauge registers just below half full.

I thought it was the sender so I replaced that. But that did not fix the problem.

Also, for informational purposes, when I replaced the sender, I tested the float at various places and the fuel gauge accurately reflected the position of the float.

At this point, it's difficult for me to tell how much gas is in the tank.

Anybody have a clue what is going on?

Thanks.

Trying to exhaust all possibilities; is there any play at all in the tank mounting? Could it be shifting during hard cornering and 'returning to center' later, when you're not looking? Goofy theory, I know, but given the symptoms you describe this has got to be something changing how the fuel is read, rather than the reading equipment. (Sounds like your gauge is fine based on your tests with the float and new sender.)
