Default .:: DISSAPEARING GEARBOX - WORST LUCK - WHERE ARE MY GEARS? ::.

To make a long story as short as possible...It was a nice night, so I decided to take the GF to a concert in the Cab. Concert over, driving home I stop to get gas...leave the gas station the car is smooth as butter...I hang a right turn in second gear, the car stalls---I start it right back up and go to shift to first (from a stop) and voila----NO GEARS....My shifter acts as one LARGE neutral....I cant move the shifter left or right, only up and down and it stays in neutral, never clicks into a gear or engages.

If I pull down very hard, I can feel it BARELY engage into a higher gear possibly 4th or 5th, but other than that....NOTHING. No left movement, no right movement, only up and down. It WILL drive in that high gear, just takes time to get momentum of course so it doesnt stall out.

I fly to SANFRAN at 6am, so I wont be able to have the car taken to the shop until monday when I return---until then, those who are experienced please tell me what I am looking at here!

BTW - Clutch seems normal, car starts and runs normal, idles normal, just a problem with the gearbox.

Sounds to me like a problem with the shifter assembly itself, not the gearbox.

That would make sense, I feel as if the "track" the shifter follows, has just shifted back about 8 inches, just out of reach?

There is a single 13mm bolt that connects the shift rod to the transmission and can be found by removing the plastic cover under the trans (a handful of M6 10mm bolts). Check that first.

Isn't it great to have people like this around? Hope you can get it fixed cheaply and quickly.

The other, typical, issue is that the plastic ball cup insert under your shift lever has deteriorated. When this happens, the forward locating rod drops down, leaving the shift lever free to swing in all directions. Very easy fix.

I eliminated this problem by making my own linkage:

Or it's a deteriorated shift sleeve... what I'm currently fixing on my car.

Using the shift ****, can you raise the lever an inch or two?

Best,
Udo

I will "LIMP" the car to my house in high gear on monday, and investigate from there, thank you for that checkpoint.

I will check that as well, would I go through the console? If it were this problem, would you give a few pointers on fabricating my linkage?

I only had 20 minutes before I had to leave for SANFRAN after it happened, so I did not get to play doctor toooo much, however, I feel ilke there was slight play vertically with the lever, I will also check this. Through the console?

All in all, it seems that it isnt going to be a transmission rebuilt, so that is slightly relieving!

Remove the center tunnel cover from the bottom. 20+ M6 10mm nuts. You'll probably have to remove the front and rear plastic covers too, again a handful of M6 10mm plastic nuts and regular bolts.
