Default She's a squealer!

Folks, I have recently purchased a '91 964 Tip (in Grand Prix White....) and she has developed a loud squealing upon braking. I am told by the local porsche shop that this is a problem with Tiptronic cars and nothing can be done about it. In order to stop announcing my presence every time I brake, I was there is a simple fix. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks Scott, Definitely the brakes. I am told it is because a Tip is constantly engaged and edging on the discs?

mine is not tip. but i used to have the very same problem then the front right heat shield fell off from behind the brake disk, well actually rusted off, and it never squeeled again. May be yours may also be at the end of their life. I was advised not to bother replacing it £15 if need. I may do it in the spring when i fit new legs.

It's common for the brakes on the 964 to squeal a bit. Water gets behind the pads and corrodes the calipers (especially the rears brakes) which cause them to squeal as I guess the brake pads don't make a flat contact with the discs. You can get anti-squeal shims that (I believe) stick onto the back of the brake pad to help stop the noise, but they don't always work. It may mean that you have to have the brake calipers overhauled depending on how much it bothers you!

There are anti-squeal shims, there's some type of chemical treatment for the pads - none of that worked for me. My car sounded like a school bus coming to every stop. The only fix was to replace my rotors, which worked for some months. I still get a little squeal occasionally, but not like it was.

Being a tip has nothing to do with brake squeal. My brakes have never squealed. Find a new "Porsche" shop.

First thing I would check is the type of brake pads installed; some are well known for their ability to squeeeeeeeal ! Then check to see if the antisqueal "SPIDERS" are in place. Take the pads out, clean everything, and replace with stock pads and antisqueal spiders and you should be good to go.
