Default Kilometres to empty - trip computer

Driving along the highway yesterday with an eye on the kilometres to empty readout, and looking for a petrol station. Gets to about 30 km's left, then starts ticking down very quickly, so after about 10 more km's, now showing empty. Turns out there was still a couple of litres left when I finally found a petrol station, so the original 30 to go was probably about right (and yes, I did check for a fuel leak when I stopped). Has anyone else noticed this, and if so, does anyone know why it happens? (Or maybe most people are bright enough to get fuel before it runs out.)
