Default I thought I knew what kind of car I owned….

….then I bought Adrian Streather’s excellent 964 Data Plate Code Breaker book.

It states that a 1990 Carrera 2 Coupe with code 964-340 is a California spec car that should have a C03 as the first option code. Problem is, the first option code on my under hood label is C02 (all US states except California).

Car was originally purchased in the state of Virginia. Based on this I would have expected the labels to read 964-330 with a C02 option code. And yes, the under hood label matches the label in my Warranty & Maintenance book.

I also own Adrian’s 911 Enthusiasts book and it seems to say the same, i.e., it matches what the Data Plate Code Breaker book says.

Any insight into solving this mystery would be appreciated.

Mine is a 90 US except Cali. Some of the Code decoders are not perfect. And some books are wrong too, maybe there is an errata section for Adrians book... I think I've seen it.
Is there something you wanted to get from the Cali. spec car?

No, I just wanted to understand the discrepancy, i.e., "Is my car an oddity?" or am I reading the referenced books incorrectly?

What numbers are on your label? Same as mine (964-340 with a C02)?

MY '93 C2, 1st sold in CA, says, "CO2" on the front hood paper sticker.

I have no idea if there's some bizarro-one-off story of my car being some dealer-to-dealer "illegal alien" importation.
Just offering my car's "sold in CA" + "CO2"-sticker correlation.

If yours is a '93 C2 964-340 with a C02, this seems correct. Later on in the Code Breaker Book, it also states:

C02 USA all states from model year '91
C03 California until model year '91

So I take this to mean that cali cars were designated C02 starting with the '92 MY. What cannot be deduced is what was the code for all other states, before MY '91?

The dealer-to-dealer transfer is an interesting possibility though, but my '90 C2 964-340 should then have a C03....

[visions of the Blues Mobile's last moments flash to mind... (absent the whole Illinois *****-thing, of course)]

Uh, no thanks.

Factory shipping stickers -- from a company that changed designations seemingly at the drop of a lodenhut -- wouldn't surprise me so much.
Buy a six-pack, and mulling over the whole affair in topic-appropriate inibriation, would be my first inclination. Ya know?

Well, I have confirmation from an authority on the subject, that I have a car that morphed down the production line as California spec car (hence the 964-340 designation), which received a C02 (49 state) option code since it was destined for sale in the state of Virginia. There can be numerous reasons why this happened, but I'll probably never know exactly why (e.g., dealer or customer ordered a car that could be registered easily in CA if the need arose, etc).

Now to find out what makes a CA car different from the run of the mill type.

As for your mysterious car elbeee964, I think I've burnt enough brain cells on figuring mine out (I think).

It's EASY, Breale...
My mis-delivered (but presciently VA-labeled) "California" car always KNEW it was meant as a Virginian...
And so it was always meant to be. ...Only 15 years delayed.

Fate's patient that way.

(Or, perhaps... mine was the factory's effort to redress a 1990 VA/CA delivery screw-up that had been sitting 'on the books' for 3 years...)
