Default Front speakers

I need to replace fronts. I have misatched grilles on the lower/larger speaker so I want to buy ones with subtle black mesh (no star wars) grilles included. I am willing to replace tweeters too if there is a package out there that is plug (solder) and play. I am done with dremeling etc. and am looking for a nice solution as the rears (infinity reference), given their size, are not able to provide a lot of sound. Thanks for your input and sources.

I just put new Infinity Kappa in the rear, and they are 4" x 6", as far as I know the fronts are 51/4".

I disconnected the rears and put Alpine in front (same setup as yours with Ipod interf.) - don't miss the rear speakers at all....

I like the flat-six speaker I have. All the other stuff sounds like crap.

I did the same - Infinity all round. The OEM tweeters are still there but not connected. The 5 1/4" Infinity have crossover and tweeter integrated.

There is a heavy crossover inside the door handle. It will not work with the Infinity component speakers (separate tweeter). I tested it, and the cross-over frequency is way different. I removed the factory cross-over to save the weight.

I needed just a couple of dabs of RTV to keep the OEM rear grills in service. The Infinity front grills have a silver finish which I wish I had sprayed semi-gloss black to match the OEM. Perhaps some day soon....

Sound? I am an audiophile, and the sound with any speakers sized for the factory locations is thin unless you add sub-woofers in the rear foot wells. Even then, the cabin noise is too loud to consider this a listening environment.

I don't want to add weight or compromise the already-meager rear passenger space. The Infinity package works with the stock electronics, and is a huge improvement over the factory speakers (I guess they had to save cost somewhere). I enjoy the sound of the mechanicals, and the music is background to that.

I meant to say I have mismatched grills. I went to ciruit city with a round template I made after seeing the factory hole in the door. I opened up 5 different 5 1/4 and none of them fit?????????? I get plenty of mid from the rear so if I could just find a round woofer that would screw right in with nice black mesh grills.....I WOULD BE VERY HAPPY!!!!!!!!
BTW, the diameter of the template I made is a hair under 4 1/2 inches.

4 1/2 " for the backs.

I replaced the fronts and backs last month. Not near enough bass, but I'm still using the stock head unit and amp. I was able to use the stock grills on the front, not on the back with the speakers I bought (Infinity in back, MB Quart in front).

I also eliminated the rear speakers and re-covered the deck. It looks very clean without the grills. I then had a 3-way component speaker system, Focal 165 VR3 installed in the doors. The speakers are: 6.5" woofers, 4" midrange and 1.75" tweeters. The install took a few hours and looks like it was always in place. The speakers are designed for shallow mounting situations like we have in our doors. The sound is very good, much better then prior with the speakers mounted in the rear deck, since there is more of a cavity in the doors to help produce a deeper lower sound then in the rear decks, which actually has very little space. I think this is a good way to go unless as Springer said if you "add sub-woofers" and I am way too old for that booming sound. wow I sound like my parents, what the He.l happened. Anyway, its another option.

I think the problem you'll have isn't in the diameter of the speaker, but in the depth between the cab's rear door cards and the cab top and seat belt mechanisms. It was difficult for me to get the 4 1/2's into the stock hole. Make sure, if you plan on using the stock grill and mount, that you get a thin speaker depth.

aghhh, I see....the kappa perfects have a huge magnent, so I doubt I will be able to use them I can use the 5.25 in the front, maybe I could trade the 6.5s for some 4.5s?

You can call Crutchfield and they will tell you what fits.

I don’t believe this thread…. The best sound is a drilled Air box and a twin outlet exhaust or a cup-pipe….who needs speakers??
