Default SOLVED! Oil pressure gauge misreading- SOLVED!

Hi guys,

Any guesses on what makes an oilpressure gauge to read 1 bar when ignition is on but the engine in OFF?

Meter moves correctly in accordance to revs except it start to high (1Bar).
So idle is 2.5bar:ish.

- Oil pressure sender?
- Gauge itself
- Ground error?

Thanks,

Daniel

Remove a battery cable ,
does the needle drop to zero ?
If it does not , the gauge is funny and needs repair / replacement .

Did you do the test ?

If you unplug the wires from the sender does the needle drop to zero ?

Hi Indycam,

No, I did not have access to the car.

Come to think of it, if I break the power at the battery, the oilpressure sender will also loose its power.
So I will not be able to judge if it was either the sender or gauge which are at fault, right?

Thanks,

Daniel

If without power the gauge does not drop , its the gauge .
The gauge could be up because there is a small current going into it or it could be up because its meter movement is damaged . If you remove a battery cable there can be no current . If the gauge stays up without current , the problem is inside the gauge .

If you unplug the sender and the needle drops to zero , then you know the problem isn't between the sender and the gauge .

Do you think there is a difference between turning ignition OFF and lifting the battery connector in this particular case?

Since the gauge needle goes to zero when I turn the ignition OFF.
Either way we do not know wether it is the sender or the gauge, right?

No need to be sorry .

When you have the key to the on position and the
sender unplugged , does the gauge read zero ?

Problem solved.

By disconnecting the oil pressure sender, the gauge when to the top.
By grounding that lead made the gauge go all the way to zero.

We draw the conclusion that the oil pressure sender was at fault. After a new one the oilpressure was easy to read again.

Thanks!
