Default Beeping warning tone

Hi chaps

I've just finished replacing my steering universal joint. All went well, but now as soon as I move the gear selector out of park, I get a continuous beep, beep, beep - it's quieter/not the same as the 'door open' tone.

You can hear the tone here:
http://www.graphicpull.com/porsche/p...rning_tone.wav

What am I likely to have knocked or inadvertently disconnected? I can see two connectors which I can't see sockets for (see attached), but I thought they were hanging before I started.

Any help greatly appreciated (new to the forum and 964 ownership).

Cheers

Rich

I'm not sure what that sound is; seat belt chime?? Nor do I recognize those connectors. What year is your car?

I'm curious about the steering universal. Why did you replace it?

Oh, and welcome to the forum. It is generally good form to post pictures of your car. We love pics!

Cheers,
Dave

Both connectors look very familiar... The one on the left looks like the airbag plug. What year is your car, do you have the original airbag wheel (if you have a ROW car airbags are not standard), and do you have any warning lights?

(I hate that tone in my car... It's Porsche's version of fingernails-on-chalkboard annoying.)

Default still binging

The car is a '91 964. I believe it to be a ROW version as I'm in the UK (only had it two weeks and came with very little history). No airbags fitted on either side.

Seatbelt chime - mmm, I wondered that, but doesn't is mute after a while - this just keeps on and on. Can anyone confirm this is the same chime as the seatbelt one?

Warning lights - I've had a couple pop up every now and then, one to say the cab is open (it's not), one to say the brake pads are worn (they're not).

Car photo. Consider it done (just the avatar until I get a better pic).

As for the universal joint for the steering - the steering wheel would binding in certain places. Was quite bad and is now like new. I have photos of the removal - could do a little write up if it helps anyone (will post elsewhere as I guess it's a bit off topic).

Thanks for the responses so far, I'm sure we'll crack it. Keep'em coming.

last time I worked under the dash i knocked loose the connector to the VDO box, under the left side of the dash. I had many beeps and lights until I found it and plugged it back in all the way.

Thanks Jscaramella, I'll give the VDO unit another check over now.
Vifa - Yes, if I leave the door open and pull the gear selector out of park, I get the loud, slow, "door open" bing tone. Then I shut the door and the tone changes to the one I mention above.

Default Another look under the dash

I've just been out to check it over again. See image below.

I check the VDO unit, but all seems well. In fact the whole car seems to function ok, so this must be a very minor warning tone (maybe it is the seat belt tone, can anyone confirm that?).

Here are a list of the things I've had to disturb to do the steering universal joint:

Steering column/stalks
Ignition switch
climate control panel

Can you isolate the box making the sound? If so, is there a number on it? That can be found in the PET (parts catalog).

By the way, you can get a copy of the PET as a free download in pdf format. I'll look for a link . . .

About the 'door open' tone, I don't get it. I tried with both doors. Nothing! Can it be that the Turbo didn't have this?

(as best I recollect...)

Keys in ignition + door open? = repeating chime
Headlights on + keys out + door open? = constant tone

Nope. I don't get the repeating chime while 'Keys in ignition + door open', but I do get the a beeping tone when 'Headlights on + keys out + door open', but this is not a constnat tone.

"keys in/out" . . . could it be you've got a problem with your ignition switch connections? You did say you had to touch that.
