Fixing Electric Windows Lifters
My passenger window seems to have come adrift from the lifter. There was a noise and now the window does not move with the switch but it does go up and down by hand. I know how to remove the door card but I just wondered what to expect when I taken the plastic on the inside of the door off.
Any tips appreciated.

The glass parting company from the lifter is not at all uncommon either. For reasons that I can't explain it seems our US cousins have a lot more trouble with the switches than we seem to do over here. Maybe it's something to do with the weather.
The problem I had with both windows on my car was that the lifter bar rusts and it's tension relaxes on the glass. The rubber filler strip just releases from the lifter when you lower the window - the lifter drops but the glass doesn't. There are two possible solutions. Which one you choose to use will depend on how much money you want to throw at the problem.
The cheap fix is to use some windscreen bonding adhesive (or similar) to hold the glass in the lifter. Works for me and has remained working for more than 2 years.
The more expensive solution is to buy a new lifter and rubber seal and install them. I have no idea how much but you can bet it won't be as cheap as a bit of adhesive.
Your choice.

Dave

Pretty sure not the switch - it was working but only going up and down half way, then there was a clonk and the window goes up and down freely by hand.
964russ - what would cause the adhesive to fail? I was thinking of using something like Sikaflex, which held the cycle wings on on my Caterham (since sold, sniff) at over 100mph.
