90 cylinder head leakage

Looks like I have some minor oil weeping coming from my cylinder heads. May be due to the design issue with the gasketless heads. Car has 70K miles and runs like a top. Just started to notice small amount of oil drops from right side. Thought it was due to lack of running this summer, been on road out of country a lot. I was quoted $7000 to replace with set of 993 heads with 20K miles on them. My question" is it worth it to incur that much for a few drops of oil" I don't believe I have lost any power but have not had it tested on a dyno. I also do not use a lot of oil. Any opinions

I have a friend who used to have an 89 C4 and the shop that serviced the car noticed a little seepage and told him not to worry about it. He put another 30,000 miles before selling the car (baby on the way) and it did not change.

Just keep an eye on it.

thanks. With the freaking stock market the way it is, my portfolio can live with a few drops of oil on the garage floor.

Cylinder head leakage

Check the head bolts for correct torque first. I had a similar problem and it was a broken bolt.

I agree, unless it the Exxon Valdez, adding a little oil is far cheaper than the $7000 repair bill. This may sound a little strange because it still baffles me but my car started to leave a couple of drops on the floor every few days. I switched from dino oil to Lubro Moly full synthetic and for more than 2 years and better than 25,000 miles it has not put one drop on the floor (Whood a thunk it?)

90 heads leaking

Hi,
if you do eventually go for the more expensive option the 993 parts need to be modified the later 964 Cylinder Barrels & Pistons are cheaper and do the same thing. I have some oil leaks from either the base cylinder O-rings 1 & 3 or the crank case through bolt O-rings. It’s a little annoying on short runs when she although leaks only a few drops on long runs over 2-3 hours. I have friends at Rennlist tell me they actually reduced or stopped leaks with Brad Penn 20W 50.

Apparently, Mobil1 has changed the formula and not well matched to the older air cooled engines so they leak at little more now than normal ?

For last 10 years used Mobil1 15W 50 and recently Mobil1 0W 40 which delivered less oil pressure @ hot idle in traffic and maybe more leaks so I changed back to the thicker 15W 50. I might try Brad Penn 20W 50 at its exceed the Porsche factory viscosity ratings so maybe this might reduce your heads from weeping
Cheers

same issue here - was running 10w40 - it leaks, so i'm switching to 15w50 instead, only with top ups for now...
