Hi Andy, no is the short answer. The long answer is he and his wife are off to Florida for a well earned break and he's left instructions for no one else to look at my car. They're back in ten days or so, and he will look at it then so I'll have to keep biting my nails and not spending any money until we get the verdict. I have taken the opportunity for the paint shop to do some little jobs while it's in there, so at least when we get this fixed I'll feel as though I've gained something from this (probably expensive) little problem.
I'm trying not to worry too much about what this could be, but I can't help thinking it could be a tooth on one of the diffs... hope I'm wrong.

Whilst I have the utmost confidence in my mate I have a crisis of conscience over whether I need to pass this onto an expert. His garage is a very well respected and well run family business but I do think this may be a job for a specialist. I guess thay will be offended if I get someone else involved, but at the end of the day a 911 isn't like any other car is it?
Am I being paranoid. What would you do? (We've been mates for 30 years...)

It sounds like it could be the dual mass flywheel to me. When mine failed I had the following symptoms:
1. Step on the gas or take the pedal off the gas quickly and I got a quick jerk, followed by a clunk.
2. If I stepped on the gas continuously, as in light acceleration, it was often accompanied by a grinding noise (although it was actually vibration of the failed DMF). This was particularly noticeable at low speeds.
3. If I was driving at moderate speed and didn't take my foot off the gas or accelerate or decelerate, it could be almost silent.
DMFs fail out of the blue, with usually no warning signs whatsoever. They just decide to go and then all of a sudden you have instant symptoms.

Mine did this and turned out to be the diff lock assy on the front of the gearbox. There are a load of clutch type plates and a planet gear. Part of the clutch assy broke up and flew into the planet gear, It totally blew and locked up in the end.
I have been told that this part was not assembled corectly years ago and was just waiting for the right time to go!!

I understand your mate is out of town.. but has anyone looked specifically at the driveshafts? The connections at the CV Joints? I am still wondering if you have a loose drive allen bolt (or 3)... I would eliminate that as a possibility before worrying about internals. It's really easy to look and verify.
What is that logical principle? (Can't remember the name of it) that often the problem is the simplest one...

Ok, mystery solved. The centre diff clutch plates have disinegrated.... so everything's got to come out. Oh well at least all the other jobs (oil leaks, valves, etc) can be done. It's a relief to know what the problem is to be honest, let you know how it goes.

Planet gear carrier and sun gear from centre diff apparently. Not something I'd expected to happen, but there ya go it's an 18 year old car. Will be getting other stuff done while the engine and box are out so yes, will be expensive!

Luckily my mechanic has a lot of contacts so I'm hoping he'll find one a bit cheaper somewhere. Let you know what happens, 'fraid I'm a bit unlucky with most things. If I fell into a barrel of **** I'd come out sucking my thumb... at least it isn't the height of 'Summer' (whatever that is)
