Rear blower motor replacement
After parking my car last week, I heard an awful noise coming from the engine compartment. After the initial shock (I swear I felt a tug at the wallet), I did some more investigation and found that it was the rear blower motor going out.
It turned out to be a relatively inexpensive fix. Thanks to Eric Kessel for the help! I checked into several options and found the motor only for $179 from Vertex. Just a bit better than the $900 the dealership wanted. (Pelican was $479, Vertex was $379) I had it overnight mailed and total came to $214.
It was a very easy fix. About 2 minutes to pull the motor out, about 10 to put it back in, and about an hour more checking out the engine compartment up close and personal. This was the first work that I've done anywhere near the engine...gotta say it's pretty cool in there!
In case anyone needs the part, it's SKU# 10 and Part # 0130111145.

Good price, keep the old one. Sometimes you can gat at the bearings or bushings to lubricate them enough to get rid of the squeal. Check out the search threads regarding the 964 blower resistor. There is a replacement resistor part that should be checked out. Apparently there have been some nasty fires caused by these faulty resistors. You should find info if you search under "964 blower resistor". Thought you should be aware of this.

There was a NHTSA/DOT recall on the rear heater blower resistor so Porsche will replace it (and should have already) free of charge, dealer cost is currently $11.75USD.

two lateral bolts and a few visible wire connections. The back of the blower housing hooks onto a stationary stud. Just pull up on the housing once the bolts are out. I took mine out and took the housing apart and sprayed a light gease on the moving parts and busing or bearings. Can't remember which it was and the squelling noise went away and has been good for two seasons now. If the motor is shot, try a salvage shop. Don't drop anything as you will go nuts trying to get it out of the engine compartment.

Buy a new unit. They're cheap enough. $180 - $200 from Vertexauto. Standard Bosch unit. Replacing is easy as Don has said. Once out, you need to reove the fan from the motor. It's a press-fit so you just need to suspend the fan and use a punch or small screwdriver to tap the spindle until it's out. The new one presses on tight no problems.
