I have heard the same as you: That it was raised slightly and bumperettes added because of the 5 MPH minimum damage requirements in the US. Anyone have documentation of this?

I think as I will be fitting KW variant suspension that I believe has solid mounts and new wishbones with poly bushes it will be worth corner weighting.

The DOT and NHTSA have reams of documentation on the requirements that manufacturers must meet if their cars are to be sold in the USA. Bumper height requirements (for pedestrians), headlight height requirements and bumper impact absorption requirements are a very tiny part of them.
