Comments please?
Hello,
I've been watching the forum for some time as I'm considering a 964. I've come across a nice looking car that has the following comment...#2 lower front head stud broken...how big of a job is this? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The engine must be removed, and the stud replaced. Depending where the stud has broken, and the material used for the stud, it could be difficult to remove. While the engine is apart, you may find that you want or need to replace other studs and do other maintenence that can only be done with the engine removed. It's difficult to estimate the cost, but I would talk to a local Porsche shop to get an idea.

The problem is that you (or your mechanic) are not going to want to simply replace the head stud and do nothing else to the engine while you have it apart to get to the head stud. You will say, "well as long as we have it apart, we might as well..." I'd figure a top end rebuild at a minimum which is $4K-$7K if you hire it out (depending on what is done). Worst case, a complete engine rebuild will set you back $10K-$15K if you hire it out. Ask me how I know....

If the rest of the car checks out you could lowball and if successful you can go into the motor when able. Think about it.
