Default Trolley Jack and stands recommendation UK

I'm going to do some 'clambering' under the car this winter, so need to buy a decent trolley jack and some axle stands.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to where to buy this?

Try these (although you might find a better price elsewhere).

Craig,

If you've got a Costco account they usually have a good 3 ton low saddle jack for about £60-odd made by Arcan. It's no lightweight I'll warn you but you feel pretty safe that it's up to the job.

Regards

Dave

Craig,

I'll second the costco recommendation. I got two and lifted the whole thing off the floor by doing each side gradually.

+1 for the Costco Arcan jack.
It's a real heavyweight and does the job well at a great price.
Mind your back when you lift it into the car!

Sorted then, I took a look at some jacks and couldn't believe how much it's possible to pay £1k+

Steve, did you use axle stands aswell as lifting both sides? sounds a bit scary !!

Thanks all!

Another endorsement for the Costco Arcan jack. Love it.

I'm about to use it in the next hour. Oil change and brake/clutch slave flush today.

Craig, the one Steve has pictured is the 2 tonne (I think), I bought the 3 tonne from Costco in the UK. I actually meant to buy the 2 tonne but they didn't stock them. I'm very happy with the 3 tonner - it's black in colour and a bit bulkier than the silver one - but looks like it will last forever.

Craig,

Mine are the black 3t version and with one each side i didn't bother with axle stands.

I know i'm going to take some 'i can't believe you were that dumb' comments but i didn't use stands so it made it easier to get underneath the whole car, especially when i took both rear wheels off

"Racing, competing, it's in my blood. It's part of me, it's part of my life; I have been doing it all my life and it stands out above everything else."

Ayrton Senna.....

If you can spare the cash, I would buy a car lift (about £2k) which I did and it is much safer. I don't have to worry about the car collapsing on me and killing me and even if I'm not under it the car won't fall off and get damaged. It will pay for itself after a few years.

Craig, I regularly put the car up on jack stands, once every month or two. In fact, it's on stands right this minute, I'm flushing the brake fluid for my next track weekend in 2 weeks.

Not scary at all if you use the following procedure:

Jack up one side using the rear jack point in front of one of the rear wheels. Get it high enough to place a flat top jackstand under the front jacking point behind the front wheel on that side. Repeat the procedure for the other side. Then use the engine case to jack up the entire rear. Place flat top jackstands under both rear jacking points and lower. Takes me 10 minutes to have the car off all 4 wheels.

I never knew it was ok to jack the car up on the crankcase, is it really ok?

There have been several different opinions that I have read on this board. Most have said it is ok. The concern is the motor mounts and whether it could cause them to fail. I have not read any other way to lift the back to get the rear jack stands in place.
