Default CCW's rubbing in the rear... 17x10 Classics...

Oh noez!!! My new track wheels are rubbing the fender lip in the rear! Both sides on hard bumps!

They are CCW Classics 17x10 with 275/40-17 Toyo RA1's(IIRC).

Should I :
(1) Get the fenders rolled - don't want to do this really!
(2) Send the wheels back to CCW ($$$$)

GRRRRRR I bought CCW's so I didn't have to roll the fenders and looks like I won't be able to use them at my upcoming trackday after all! I have to run my D90's with street tires... I'm not happy about this!

How hard is it to "roll" fenders yourself? The shop that did my cornerweighting/align said it's easy with a rubber mallet and some patience. I would hate to mess up my baby!!!

How much rubbing are we talking about? Rolling the fender is not that huge of a deal with proper equipment. There are tools out on the market which mounts to the hub to push the fender outwards. Here is a LINK I found which shows the process.

What is the offset of the wheel?

In addition, with lowered ride height you'll need firmer suspension and possibly new rubber bushings in the rear.

Not sure about the offset of the wheels. CCW said they knew about 964's and I just trusted them.
It's close. Not a lot of rubbing, but it does rub in turns with bumps. I'm afraid of cutting the tire at my upcoming trackday.

I have Bilstein HD's and H&R Red's installed. Just got aligned & cornerbalanced today.

Could I just raise the car up to solve the problem? Probably waste my alignment...

Hmmm... My mechanic told me not to put in the bumpstops for the rear Bilsteins. Could this be causing me to get too much travel and therefore rub? I'm not bottoming out from what can tell. I'm guessing the wheel is just too big.

It's not difficult to calculate the offset (and it would be very useful in determining options).

a. Lay down the tire on its side, outside of the wheel to the floor.
b. Lay a straight edge acrosss the top--now, the inside side wall.
c. Measure the distance from the floor to the straight edge (overall width)
d. Measure the distance from the inside of the wheel to the straight edge (backspace). Your ruler should be resting against the backside of the wheel where it mates up to the hub.
e. Divide the overall width by 2 and subtract this amount from the backspace value.

Example:
Overall width: 12"
Backspace: 8"
Offset calculation: 8" - 6"(width/2) = 2"
Convert to metric: 2" x 25.4 = 50.8mm

CCW (Great service by the way) says I'm running 45mm on the rear wheel.

Okay, that sounds correct. How much negative camber are you running? Did you have these wheels/tires on the car when the alignment and corner balance was done? If so, your shop should have gotten the clearance right.

I've run the Toyo RA1's with similar wheels--you shouldn't be hitting the fender. Your shop blew it and should drop everything, fix your ride height, realign/balance the car (if necessary) and make sure you don't miss a second of track time.

Donovan,

I am running toyo RA1 275's with 18x10 ET45 and -2 camber in the rear with Cross suspension with 800lb springs and I have rubbing on the *inside* under only very heavy compression. My ride height is such that my tires are essentially inside the fender wells (very low).

I suspect you need some more negative camber. You can do it yourself because toe changes automatically with the change. Do a search for Garrett's threads on his setup. Don't fret I did my alignment myself, and could not be happier.

The only other variable then is your spring rate. 275 in the rear is very aggressive, so be prepared to play with it a bit to get it working right.

Hi guys, I'm back from overseas. I had my fenders rolled and no more rubbing. I know it was a band-aid fix but I didn't have time to investigate further. The trackday is tomorrow ... I had the fenders rolled today and tried driving as hard as I could on a deserted road, and no rubbing... we'll see!

Hi Donovan,

Do you have any pictures of your car with the new wheels? CCW you say? I called them to inquire about their wheels and the guy that I spoke with said that they don't make a 17" wheel, would really like to see your setup.

These are Classics 17" Titanium finish, "Street race" build meaning lightening holes, no centercaps, but SS ARP bolts.

I bought them from CCW brand new a few weeks ago so I'm sure they make them in 17" still.
