Default 3rd Brake Light Tape Removal

I've read allot of posts about removing the 3rd brake light and replacing with one that doesn't obscure rear vision ( LED's or slimline). So my question is, has anyone
successfully found a solvent that will remove the original double sided Tape without damaging the defrost wires? I think razor scraping would risk damaging the wires.

The short answer is no. Those who decide to use the 993 roof-mounted 3rd brake light replace the rear glass with the 993 version.

I replaced my rear glass with the Euro 964 version and will add the 993 light. The rear view is amazing without that light, just like my 69.

The CHMSL has plastic bonded to the glass and a black surround made as part of the glass. I have never heard of anyone removing it.

Hard to fault the Porsche engineers since it is such a great car, but that is one of the first things I noticed about driving my car. That thing is huge! Did they ever look through the rear view?

Yep I hated that at first as well. Then I added a tail and roll bar and now I only have a little streak I can see through. So I just keep telling myself that Lotus guys have it worse

There is no way to take the black frame off. It seems to be part of the glass cast in during manufacture. (I realized this when I went at mine with an X-acto knife ). Solution is new rear glass, P/N 964 545 107 06.

Signing on just in case someone finds a solution. Could probably make some money off it.
