964 Belt Replacement

Does anyone have a link to a GOOD resource for DIY 964 Belt Replacement.

When I rev my 964's 3.6 engine upon start-up I get a belt-skreeking noise. This also occurs when I hard downshift in third?

Do you think it is the fan belt or the distributor belt?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

:)Almost certainly the fan belt. You should get the tension on it checked.

Your distributor belt has teeth.
If it shifts the shrieking you hear will be your own!

The fan belt tension seemed ok? It had about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of play in the belt. Could the sound be comming from the pully?

It could be your belt tension sensor. Those seem to be going bad of late.
Mine started shrieking some time ago and I pulled it and cleaned it up nicely and oiled the wheel, but it's back shrieking again. I've ordered a replacement. $70. Yowza! For a switch.

Here is a good link showing you how to replace the belt.

If you hear a squealing noise, its likely the v belt. The distributor belt has teeth. It cant slip, but it can break. You'll know it if it breaks. Its tougher to replace because you have to remove the distributor and take the distributor apart. I have replaced both belts and the v belt is an easy job.

Thanks dKeen,

Are the instructions only for 993 or are they also applicable to the 1993 964?

Thanks.

When I look at the belts that are attached to the fan I see only "toothed" belts. Where is the "Fan Belt"?

Both belts (fan and alternator) have 'teeth' but this is a normal V belt design - there are no slots in the pulleys for the teeth to fit in to.

The instructions are applicable to both 993 and 964. There are also instructions on this site for replacing the belt tensioner. If the belts still squeel after replacing them, and you have them properly tensioned, the noise may be the tensioner. But it sounds to me like its one of your belts slipping. They can slip even if properly tensioned once they get old and hard.
